Crikey. That was hard work.

I started this game 16 days ago, and apparently I've spent 1/16 of my total time playing it. I'm gonna love getting sleep again :)

A lot of it is lost in the fog of doing other things, but notable events seemed to be:

- Getting an amulet of the gourmand about the same time as Vehumet's book gifts seemed to kick in. Being able to spam Iron Shot fairly early was great.

- Spending a long time trying to find Poison Resistance, then eventually getting it from a pair of boots.

- Wiping out all the Vault Guards in seconds with Shatter  (and realising that this character might have potential!)

- Nearly dying in the Slime Pits due to hitting the wrong key and getting munched by the Royal Jelly's spawns. Left the RJ in a fork and Shattered my way to the rune.

- Nearly dying in the Tomb due to Necromutation timing out and leaving me Overloaded on the upstairs! That was unbelievably hairy, reading scrolls of teleport and creeping away from Mummy Priests desperately hoping they wouldn't wake up and smite me.

- Clearing the Hellion Island with Shatter, laughing at the suckers stuck on the other side - until finding out the hard way that the island's Lord could fly

- Finding a Manual of Fighting somewhere in Hell. I think it brought me about 30 or 40 extra HP, which provably saved my life at one point:

- Nearly dying getting the very last rune from Gehenna... not watching my mana too carefully (read: at all), having Necromutation time out (beginning to see a theme here?) and Asmodeus summoning a Fiend of some kind who then proceeded to hellfire me down to red health - got really lucky twice on that one. Firstly using blink with my few remaining MP to try and get out of LOS, which worked, then fortunately teleporting into a gold vault to hide for a bit, then emerging from there to see the rune through a Shattered crack in the wall. When you have the rune, you can use teleport control - Apportation was (not for the first time) my friend :)

Moral of this last one: Unlike some Roguelikes, Crawl can happily kill even the most super-powered characters if you don't pay attention. Having a couple of beers and settling in to enjoy the last rune was not the smartest thing I ever did.

I wimped out and didn't even try to kill Dispater or Cerebov. The first was basically cowardice - he was the first demonic badass I had ever seen, so I Shattered my way in and ran. The second was because as I was exploring his level, I found a Book of Cantrips on the ground (with Apportation in it), and took this as a hint ;)

I was also a bit traumatised by my near-death experience with Asmodeus, so I left him alive too.

Perhaps feeling a bit aggrieved, I went back to the Dungeon level where I'd left Mara parked asleep in a corridor surrounded by exclusions for most of the game (I borrowed mageykun's "mara! freakin' mara!" level annotation, and constantly having it pop up as I ran back and forth got to me after a while), dug a tunnel the right distance away, and Shattered him to death without ever seeing him.

Oh speaking of which, even when you have teleport control, Dig has its moments on your Orb run back up. w00t.

Other random thoughts:

Earth Elementalists are hard to get going, but are insanely powerful in the late late game. I had a lot of fun doing all irresistible damage, all the time. Shatter is brutal to anything that doesn't fly, and between Iron Shot (truckloads of damage), Lehudib's Crystal Spear (huge, articulated truckloads of damage) and Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (undodgeable damage, sorry Ereshkigal), the stuff that did fly (or came in groups or had the misfortune to be standing next to anything made of bone, crystal, iron.... you get the idea) got short shrift as well. As long as I had MP, life was very simple.

I think Lee's Rapid Deconstruction is underrated. It was my stock weapon through most of the game. Not underrated but insanely helpful was Sublimation of Blood - that one goes in the "how did I ever try and play without this?" bucket...

I saw a Ziggurat in Pan and would like to have tried it, but I was feeling a bit single-minded and was hunting one of the named Lords at the time. Another day. The disco sure was fun though.

At various times I learned Malign Gateway, Statue Form and Evaporate, which all turned out to be basically useless to me - that said, the first one of those is utterly awesome, though I had a hard time killing anything with it it did come in handy when I got sick of being death cursed (also Zot seemed to have levels that lent themselves to it). Then I learned Haunt, which was variously useful through the Hells. I think I'd like to try Summoning next.

Aaaanyway. Long post. Long game. I think I'm going back to three-runers for a bit, I'm exhausted!

[edit: Is the little vault I found with temple-y walls, the pair of shedu and the ophan a preview of things to come with the holy monsters? Way cool :)]
I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh

Congrats!

...you cleared the all the hells and only ended up in the abyss twice? Oh wait, they killed that hell effect in trunk. Forgot. You also cleared Pan in one go! Me, I was leaving every rune or two to return to stash. ...course, that means more abyssings. Still, that's probably one reason why you were getting overloaded so easy.

Also, you killed "3 removed MONS_BEARs". Odd.

Dig is very useful on the ascension run. Sometime, when I'm dragging loot up to my d:1 stash in anticipation of one, I'll be clearing more direct paths from stairs up to down- just in case. It's true time to shine is in Slime though.

Glad to see you finally got a kill in on Mara. Frigger is killable, it turns out. ;)

Congratz!

I envy u maybe i should have tried SEEE instead of SETm that wasnt enough for all runer.

With some preparations Mara is quite easy. with my transmuter was wielding arrows casting sticks to snakes till he made copy of me. this copy was doing almost no dmg on melee and was only spamming butterflys. summon butterflies was my last spell in alphabetical order.

:)

My favourite Mara thing is as a Tm... wield a bread ration, get cloned, then shift forms into something truly appalling and flatten both of them. This was pretty good though.

@joellercoaster

Congrats on your 1st 15-runer!

- Clearing the Hellion Island with Shatter, laughing at the suckers stuck on the other side - until finding out the hard way that the island's Lord could fly

Wait. That pan lord can fly? It didn't leave the island the last few times I killed it. :?

Characters capable of clearing a ziggurat are practically invincible. You could've beaten the demon lords if you trained evocations and used that staff of earth as a melee weapon. It's incredibly powerful.

That one's just a random one. Sometimes it can fly, sometimes it's free xp. Sometimes it Summons Eyeballs and Firestorms while Hasted.

I've tried this build a couple of times now and I don't feel the early game is hard at all... provided you have a good supply of stones to spam sandblast with. With Statue Form and Stoneskin, I was running around the Lair with an AC of 43.

Of course I died to a large slime due to inattention, but I admit, I'm having a ball with this build.

That's generally true; if you don't get screwed by lack of rocks (a couple of my first attempts had this problem), you're pretty sound until the sort of XL10-15 point in the game. At which point you need to develop a second string that isn't Bolt of Magma :P

In this game it was getting Blink working well and finding the "oGourmand to allow me to lean harder on Iron Shot, but I had good results worshipping Kiku and leading with Agony with another SEEE earlier too.

With Statue Form and Stoneskin, I was running around the Lair with an AC of 43.

I experimented with that too and it's certainly fun! It didn't solve my real problem though, which was killing things (and running away when I couldn't). I think it requires a bit more investment in other things (Unarmed Combat skill, Cheibriados, slaying..?) to work out well - definitely worth pursuing.
