CIP: Senga the SpGl of Okawaru

Background:

I got intrigued by the efforts of ZoFy in this thread, and tried some experiments. The concept of not picking up anything and going only with what you start with is quite a challenge - in an already challenging game.

At first, I wanted to see how far I could get with just pure raw melee, and went with a TrMo of Okawaru. He died in the Lair to poison, if I recall correctly. That wasn't bad, for a character with no defenses, and the only offense was point blank clawing. Then, thinking more about it, I tried a TrFi of Okawaru, because that background starts with a shield, and would significantly improve the defensive capacity of the character. He died in the Vaults to some yaktaurs or something. Again, not bad considering the limitations imposed by the challenge. Okawaru is quite powerful (and I think he is often unappreciated by certain players).

With those two above troll characters, I learned - even more than I have ever before - positional melee tactics. I've completed the game with melee characters before, but under such a conduct, a different approach is required. And one learns how to use dungeon features to the limit!

So I'm still running things through my mind, and remember a mention of Agnes (the unique spriggan), in the above mentioned thread, and how dangerous she is. In game she has just a lajatang and a robe, but is often the demise of player characters. So as a kind of joke, I started a SpGl to see how strong one could be, in such a context. She died in a hail of arrows from a centaur pack. All right, spriggans have very poor life points, I know this, but I was playing pretty good considering, and she was a quirky change of pace.

So I started another, and on dungeon level 1 a kobold nearly did me in with a dagger of electrocution. After that harrowing experience, I was looking at that dagger laying on the ground in my computer screen. Man, that is a fantastic weapon so early in the game (!). So I gave in to my greed, and picked up that dagger, thereby nullifying my conduct, and proceeded to play the game (if you can call it that) normally...

Phase 1: Get to the Temple

The first goal is to find an altar of Okawaru. By great fortune, there was one on level 2! So this is a promising start on her journey, as she can build *'s pretty quickly while the monsters are somewhat easy in the upper dungeon. Once I can get a character to the Ecumenical Temple, my next goal is to try and establish a depot on Lair level 2.

In the morgue below, you can see that Senga uses a variety of tools to get kills. Spriggans have their movement speed and EV ability, as ways to counteract their small HP pool. I'm trying to use these strengths to effect. Besides using staves for close-in killing, there is no other game plan at this point. I'll see what the game gives, and what Okawaru decides to gift me.

Some people may wonder at the Traps & Doors skill, but in version 12, it looks like they have increased the damage of traps. If I inadvertently step on a bolt trap, I can potentially take 40 damage. That will kill me outright.

By the way ; "Senga" is "Agnes" spelled backwards...

Phase 2: Establish Base of Operations

Well, immediately after leaving the temple, I Identified a scroll of acquirement. I needed a decision on the spot, in order to keep the game going. What to ask for? Decisions, decisions, decisions... Finally I asked for a weapon, and got a lajatang of electrocution. Wow - that is the best weapon I ever got from a scroll! And right in line with the character concept too. :)

I encountered the ghost of my prior spriggan, I remembered how she died and felt bad about it, but destroyed her any ways. After all, have to keep looking to the futur.

Below, I have just finished setting up my depot. You'll see that I'm testing javelin throwing, but it does not function. They're just too heavy for little spriggans. Too bad, because with her strength, she can carry quite a lot of weight. Oh well, I'll stick with what works for now. The game is still young.

Found a nice amulet, some decent fighting rings, and Okawaru has bestowed his first gift to Senga - the robe "Larph". So looks like I will continue to be a combat spriggan, for a while yet.

Traps & Doors skill is now adequate for where she is, the stabbing game is okay despite not focusing on it. I've put a concentration on staves skill, to try and get the delay down some. Always have to be mindful that I'm just one or two hits away from death...

The Warmaster Bestows:

Okawaru's next gift to Senga, was a wizard's hat. Senga put it on, and makes her head look floppy, compared to the cap she started with. But not wanting to displease the warmaster, she wears it yet.

Next came a crossbow of evasion. Senga considered it some, but decided that she did not have the desire to also learn how to shoot it, when so much needs yet to be improved. She thanked Okawaru for his generosity, and quietly stowed it at her depot.

Senga ran into Bare Claws, the ghost of the (no pick-up) troll monk I mentioned in the first post. Knowing that he had only his bare claws as a weapon, with nothing else in gear, he proved easy enough to defeat by staying beyond immediate range of them.

After, two staves followed, one of protection and the other of pain. Senga has used them occasionally, mostly the one of protection though, as it helps her AC. This was extremely handy when she faced a swarm of killer bees and a pack of centaurs.

Next was a sling of flame. Senga appreciates this gift, as slinging is something she likes doing. The flaming part is very good against various undead monsters. So much so, that she may consider learning slings skill soon, as her ability to kill things from afar is starting to tell, as she progresses deeper into the dungeon.

At the bottom of the Lair of Beasts, Senga was getting distraught. Spiny frogs, hydras, and black mambas were quite frightening. It took many shots of the sling and throwing spears, in order to fell one of these. If one of those should ever get next to her, she may not survive their attack. Then when she saw some death yaks, she was flat out exasperated...

"I'll never be able to bring one of those down, unless I can get a stab on it..." Okawaru, seeing how his prized avatar was feeling, decided to cheer her up by gifting a 'cloak of darkness'. Senga's eyes brightened, when she saw this appear at her feet. "Thank you so much, oh great warmaster - I'll make good use of your generosity!" Senga proceeded in stabbing near all the great beasts, and found a 'blowgun of the assassin' within their midst. Now Senga is quickly learning throwing skill, so that she can put this fabulous find to great use.

The evil enchantress, Kirke, fell to curare needles from the blowgun of the assassin, and Senga's slicing with the lajatang of electrocution. Then piles upon piles of ugly things followed. Senga knew that the great warmaster was watching, because Okawaru kept saying how appreciative he was of these kills. Then something appeared at her feet - a vampiric lajatang! Senga was absolutely enthralled with this gift. She quickly retired to her depot and considered if her food supplies were adequate enough, to allow the wielding of such a weapon...

After some considerations, she decided to try, ate some bread loaves, then Senga grasped the weapon and felt a great hunger. Senga's thoughts focused as she contemplated the potential power she now held in her hands: "Now I shall steal the essence of life itself, for the glory of my master..."

Senga stopped learning how to throw, as well as stabbing, since switching weapons would now only be done in emergency situations. That is, unless she should happen to discover the long lost Hive, with its legendary amount of nourishment...

Next came a flurry of close combat encounters. Concentrating staves skill is now paramount, since Senga needs her striking delay down to the minimum.

Encountered a fire crab, but figured I'd be smart and drop all my scrolls in a room before engaging it. What wasn't smart, was forgetting to close the door, as the flame bursts entered the room, and onto my pile of scrolls. "You see a puff of smoke", appeared several times when I was fighting that crab, and wasn't till I went to recover them, that I figured what that message meant...

Had a close call with a fire giant casting fireball on dungeon level 13 . He hit me for 63 in one shot - leaving nearly nothing left on my life bar! But Senga persevered, managed to recover some health while fighting a withdrawing action and succeeded in defeating it. Afterwards, Okawaru gifted a troll leather armour. Excellent timing, I must say.

Senga, both exhilerated and envigorated, by her triumph over Saint Roka - boldly came out into the open - to engage the remaining denizens of the orcish complex.
Like a twirling thresher gone mad, she sliced through a mutlitude of foes. Wargs, walking dead invoked by an orc high priest, Blork the orc, two orcish sorcerers, orc wizards, orc priests, orc warriors, and a throng of orcs - all fell to the slicing Spriggan with the vampiric lajatang.
When all enemies were no more, Senga, gazing upon the field of battle and then at her own clothes, said; " Ewww, I'm covered in blood and gore... Yuch!"

Phase 3: Systematic Clears of Three Areas

After establishing my depot and clearing out all the dungeon above it, in Phase 2; I then proceeded to clear out the Lair, main dungeon to around level 15, and the Orcish Mines.
When one area had too many awake monsters, or was getting too difficult, I would just switch to another area and come back later to finish the job.

Lack of elemental resistances is a concern.
Somehow, managed to survive all the poisonings so far.
I have the robe that Fannar wore, for cold monsters, but means I have to take a "time out" to change.
No fire resistance is starting to prove a real detriment, though. That encounter with the fire crab and later, the fire giant, really hurt.

The attacks with an ordinary staff in the above morgue, are with a staff of air, used in clearing out a multitude of electric eels in the lair (what a pain that was).

I'll see how far the vampiric lajatang carries Senga. I know that it will eventually peter out, but in the mean time, I'll work on the skills of; fighting, dodging, stealth, and maybe armour (of all things). Might have to consider some kind of dragon armour for the near futur.

All in all, though; Senga is starting to feel like I am playing an "Agnes"

Oh man. This is a little early for my liking. I was hoping to be like character level 18 - at least - before encountering her. I'm level 15, and I know she is likely better than me at this point in time. But if the gods have ordained the encounter now, I will engage in the test with my rival.

So Senga rolls up her sleeves, spits on her hands, and assumes a battle stance, while waiting for Agnes to close the gap between them. I wonder what type of "runed lajatang" Agnes is sporting...?

Okay - LOL! I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that message. So the game has decided to pair us with equal weapons.

The battle ensues, and I'm seeing there is going to be a problem, after a few rounds. Agnes doesn't hit as often as Senga, but she hits harder, and is drawing more life than what Senga does in retaliatory strikes. Soon enough, I'm in the red life zone, but have already started falling back towards the upstairs. Next problem I notice, is that Agnes is faster then Senga, she is getting in extra moves and hit attempts. Man, not fair!

Now I'm desperate. I have to get away, like now. So I have to use my only scroll of blinking (the rest got roasted in the fire crab incident), but that won't carry me far enough. I know that Agnes will still close the distance to me, before I reach the stairs. So after the blink, I also have to use a potion of speed. Also, I have to be very careful, and try and retrace my exact steps followed while exploring, so that I don't step onto an undiscovered bolt trap - and that I do not get entangled in a web trap either. It was tense, but I made it with 3 moves to spare.

So now I'm resting and regenerating. The smart thing would be to come back later, hopefully catch her asleep and get a stab with a dagger on her. But I'm pumped up, and nor do I feel like having to exclude this whole branch. I know where Agnes is, and I'm certain I can take her down. I'm going to have to unwield the vampiric lajatang though, so it will also cost me another bread ration.

So I make my preparations, take a deep breath, and go back down the stairs. I try and steer Agnes through some web and bolt traps, while moving around obstacles. I'm shooting curare - hit her three times out of five, just to slow her down some. All the while, an orb spider has made an appearance, so I'm also dodging orbs of destruction that it constantly launches my way. Finally, Agnes, slowed and poisoned, gets ensnared in a web - I must act now: I switch to a dagger and stab.

It's done and over with. Costly though; a currare needle, only blink scroll, potion of speed, potion of healing, unwielding the vampiric lajatang costing me a bread ration to wield it again in the futur. I tell you, Agnes can be one tough individual to take down...

I think you should have buffed the first time, maybe a potion of might/agility/haste. Didn't you know that she hits hard? Well you might have thought that you are as good, because you are a spriggan with a vampiric lajatang but it doesn't matter who you are, first time you meet her she'll be tough for most characters.

Ja, I should have, but since she is my rival, I wanted to be "sporting".
Actually, I usually kill her quick(stab) or at range. It's pretty rare I ever let Agnes take several swipes at my characters. I'm not the type of person who knows what every monster does, just prior experience from playing the game over and over. (Psieye and nago have warned me that Borris is dangerous, but as of yet, I haven't actually experienced something lethal from him.)
No, I figured she would likely be slightly better, that's why I would have preferred to be around level 18 when meeting her. But I was there, and so was she, so it went down as it did. When push came to shove, though - I chose to let go of the vamparic lajatang, and take her out in a more intelligent manner.

Phase 4: Four Way Clear

All right, so my next goal was to clear two Lair branches, the Elven Halls, and the Dungeon to level 19.

I complained about not having fire resistance before, and ol' Okawaru must have heard my pleas, as his next gift was a robe of rF++. It has a "re-curse" string attached though, but at least I have something to change into if need arises.

Arachne went down to a wand of enslavement. Surprisingly she is not poison resistant. I enslaved a redback, tarantella, wolf, and jumping spider. I got the final blow (wand of draining) in. I know Okawaru don't like having allies die, but hey, better they go than me. She managed to ding me with a poisoned arrow, before she went though, and that nearly caused death to poison later on. I was in red life for a long time, and having run out of cure potions, only had two heal wounds and the ring of regeneration to keep me going.

The last level of Elven Halls has; Nikola, Louise, and Norris. Oh man, that's a really bad combination, especially coupled with deep elf bad-ass types. I offed Louise because she can't see invisible, but for the rest, I decided to leave it for now. I'm quite disappointed about this, because I can't report a "mission complete" on this phase...

The Shoals is not quite completed. The tide is in on the last level, and even though I have the rune, I know that there's still some stuff left. I'll likely have to organize some kind of "clean up phase" in the futur. Was amusing trying to get the rune, I was pillar dancing with some merfolk impallers, snapping turtle, and sundry stuff in the room, and the "pillar" was a manticore.

I think that the only lajatang I could otherwise want, than the vampiric, and electric, would be one of speed. Okawaru has been just great, and so I'm increasing my throwing skill to get something I can use at range. I'm hoping for a spear of returning...

I received two gifts at the same time - first time I ever saw that! Any ways, one of these was some steel darts. I'm kind of liking them. I can bring down a hydra and giants with these - that was surprising.

Some gifts, detailed in the calender below the morgue, are as yet unidentified. I'm not letting go of the vampiric lajatang, unless I really have to.

Phase 5: Pushing Deeper

Just going deeper into the dungeon and vaults, mostly. Trying to gain experience and, particularly some levels in fighting skill.

Had to ask for finesse once more. Several draconians, 3 death drakes, 2 swamp drakes, 2 fire drakes, and then a gold dragon came along. Too much for me to handle all at once without some added help. Okawaru came through though, and granted it on the first try.

Have some nice gear now, but not quite what I would like in the form of resistances. I keep toying with different combinations, and none so far seem quite satisfactory.

I think that physical combat accelerates food satiation levels. Seems that when I'm in prolonged engagements, I get hungry sooner than just walking around (?). Not sure if I will have enough food to go for a full rune game (should I decide to).

Still not confident enough to face both Nikola and Norris in Elven Halls 3. They're both near the area where the big bad deep elves are mostly congregated, and Nikola has three deep elf demon summoners near him too...

Yaktaurs hit really hard with their crossbows. Maybe they upped the damage or their accuracy in version 12 (?). Nearly got killed by a pack that spawned out of thin air, just as I was traversing an open area.

I've hit "red" life several times now, maybe 5 or 6 times, if this keeps up, the laws of probability will catch up and end the game. Every time I think I should start learning some spells - or just letting go of the vampiric lajatang - Okawaru comes and gives me something new that encourages me to just keep going as is. I dunno though, even something as simple as Corona, Repel missiles, or even Apportation would help. I may just give in and learn one or two of these soon.

Any ways, Senga is quite the terror at times. A real little thresher!

Low on resistances, but damn those are some nice stats. 21/19/30! With the +9 to int, have you considered picking up any spells? You seem to be doing fine spell less as is, but surely some blink or regen or repel missiles would be worth it? Not that you're hit by that many missiles with that EV, but being hit by even fewer is nice :)

Ya, tasonir - you are making me think about those stats now.
Perhaps something like Blade Hands would improve the damage output?
Would mean I would have to dedicate some experience to transmutations and unarmed combat though.
A staff of earth can hit quite hard also, at least only earth magic skill would need to be improved.

Maybe one of you math guys could tell me which would be most efficient, considering this character's stats; a lajatang of electrocution, a lajatang of speed, a staff of earth, or blade hands.

You are fast and your EV is 50, so I don't really think you need blink or repel missiles. You don't even need haste much. I think training earth for staff and maybe spells might be a good idea. You could use stoneskin, too. And as you are a stabber, you would definitely benefit from learning passwall.

I didn't see it in your dump, but the lajatang of speed is likely to be your best damage output for sometime. It'd probably better to train earth and maybe use the staff of earth and get stoneskin and such than to shoot for blade hands. You can already do good damage with the lajatang of speed and earth spells can supplement that while training UC and TMut does nothing for your character now.

hey guys,

No, the lajatang of speed is available in a shop somewhere, I know cause it's on my "$" list.
It's a +1,+2 lajatang of speed going for ~3700 gold. I have enough enchant weapon scrolls to bring it up to +5,+5 no problem either.
Same goes for the lajatang of electrocution, I could bring that up to +5,+5 as well.

I don't know if I have a staff of earth, but I know they hit hard with enough earth magic. There are enough staves hanging around that I should have one, if I start identifying them all. (I just haven't been doing so, because letting go of the vampiric lajatang will cost another bread ration, to wield it again, and I'm running pretty tight on food reserves.) If not, then I could use a scroll of acquirement to get one, after I train some earth magic.

Besides that, I can't think of any weapon that would hit harder, a lajatang of crushing maybe? Haven't seen any of those though, they may not exist.

Reason I was inquiring about blade hands, is cause transmutations are at +3 aptitude for spriggans, while earth is at -1. Then again, unarmed combat is at -2 too, so would also require a dedicated effort to get up in the 20's.

I'd like to try and keep her in the Okawaru theme, so I'd prefer getting magic that will enhance her melee skills. If I get a lot of earth, let's say, It wouldn't be to cast something like Shatter. ;)


In other news:

I mustered enough guts to try and clear out the Elven Halls level 3, mission success there - and am currently about 1/3 of the way through clearing out Vaults 5.
News flash: Vampiric don't work on shadow dragons...
Besides some levels of the Realm of Zot, the vampiric lajatang will have served its purpose, cause if I'm going to extended it won't be sucking any life from demons and undeads.
