I should've seen this coming. . . .

I REALLY should've seen this coming (I had already restored stats once or twice. . . .)---bit it _was_ a *REALLY* cool ride, pounding tomb in a dusty, gauzy haze, with a perpetually wraith-form . . . TROLL. (!!!!)

Before anyone says "All you had to do was remove the shield of The Onion, and. . . .", dex was a -2. Wouldn't've made any difference. I SERIOUSLY doubt that staying in wraith-form would've prevented this---but that's a question worth asking, I suppose. I just teleported out of the long, convoluted way out of tomb 1, pointed me'self to waypoint #1, and ran. . . .

Futile. _Was_ a cool ride, though.

:) ;)

Re: I should've seen this coming. . . .

Actually . . . no. Dexterity was at zero, -2 with the Shield of the Onion. Stats death occurs at 0 or below:

I still don't think lich-form can protect against this, either. Anybody know anything 'bout 'dat??

Re: I should've seen this coming. . . .

There are three options to take tomb:

1) ring of sustained abilities
2) worship chei
3) Bring 3+, and ideally 5+, restore abilities potions/royal jellies.

With chei it's still a good idea to have 1-2 restore stat items, you just need less.

Lich form has a bunch of secondary resistances/immunities, but stat rot isn't one of them. Nothing changes other than you can't quaff the potions/eat jellies while in the form, but you can cancel it at any time to do so.

At least it provides a funny death ;)
I had never seen a dex stat-death, although 1-2 of my characters forgot to breathe

Btw... "Actually, all you had to do was remove the shield of the Onion."

Re: I should've seen this coming. . . .

This is the last I'm going to say on this. On the screen, at the end, my dex read: -2. I _KNOW_ the file, says it is at zero. It [my actual, unmodified] was; however, my effective was -2. I was there.

The Shield of the Onion brought it down by 2. Thus, actual (0) -2 (Shield of Onion) was what was my effective. Taking off the shield, my actual would've still been zero.

Does the file dump only display actual, unmodified by items? [Is] This a bug? Should I talk to Mantis?

I need a break, from this game, for a while. . . .

How quickly does stat death occur? I've never found myself in a situation where I was at risk of stat death, but considering how painfully long it takes to remove/equip shields, would it even have been possible to remove the shield in time?

What you should've been doing was playing trunk, where stat death no longer exists...

Thanks mumra, I somehow missed that despite being a compulsive change log reader, here's the commit message if anyone else was curious...

Remove stat death, have stat loss below 0 cause damage instead
Death after spending a while with a stat at 0 no longer occurs, but the
negative effects (slowing, significant stat-dependent restrictions)
and the recovery period after restoring from 0 still exist, and
additional stat loss when below 0 causes some irresistible damage.
Actual stat death was rare, slightly spoilery in implementation (in
particular the death timer being precisely 90 actions) and the stat
zero restrictions remain a pretty good reason to not want to have your
stats at zero for any length of time.

Have you actually tried to remove the shield of the Onion?

Do you have to kind of peel it off, layer-by-layer?
