YASD: DrEE of Ash

Entry to Temple was on D5, now I am about to enter D9 and my piety is still 0. No rings except teleportation and hunger. I was wearing both rings during 3 dungeon floors so I already descended deeper than expected so I am open to experiments.
Is it a good idea to curse the plain dagger and buckler to start getting piety? I have too wide skills and I feel the game starts to be very hard without Ash boost.
I will miss blowgun for poison-vulnerable monsters and holy sabre for undead though.
Also I am not really sure how to proceed. Petrify makes me hungry very fast, stabbing is not reliable because it takes about 6-7 hits to kill an Ogre or Orc Warrior, Stone Arrow is good but I have few MPs and no way to restore mana. My main tactics is to Petrify things from afar (if unlucky, I retreat upstairs) with occasional Passwall to stab sleeping monsters. I have not trained Stealth yet so my skills should be even more wide spread and I think I am doing something wrong :(

It looks like your goal is to build a stabber version of EE. That's going to give you a tricky early game, as you've already seen, since you aren't particularly good at enabling stabbing, and your Earth magic is so low you don't even have Sandblast at max power.

If you're set on that goal, I'd say curse your gloves to try to build piety, but don't curse your weapon: things will be hard enough without access to blowguns and stones (for sandblast). If you're willing to deviate a bit, I recommend you work on your Earth skill a fair amount, and then when you're happy with the power of those spells, try getting Spellcasting up slightly to help w/ your mana and hunger.

Oh, and curse your gloves anyway. And probably curse that buckler, too. Having some piety with Ash will help a lot, so you should get started on that. Don't be too precious with your curse scrolls.

Cursing a single amour piece is useless, Ash requires more than half armour slots to be cursed before it can earn any piety. Dr has 4 armour slots so I would need 3 cursed items. I have 1 :(
For the same reason cursing buckler but not weapon is useless too :(

That's right for armour, but I'm pretty sure it's wrong for shields. IIRC, binding a buckler will count as having one hand bound. If you then bind a one handed weapon, you will have both hands bound.

Yes, you are correct, I have just checked it in wiz mode.
Fortunately it does not make me feel bad, I found the buckler on current floor only.

Cursed shield makes me slightly bound, cursed weapon changes that to moderately bound. I think I will curse the weapon also. Really unlucky with items.

I think your main problem right now is that you've under trained earth a bit and not anything to do with Ash in particular.
Looking at my current SEEE

By this point I was using stone arrow on dangerous things too. I definitely wouldn't be going toe to to with a hippogriff and using sandblast without stones. Petrify stabbing is OK, but you probably need high spell power to really make it useful.

You can't hybridize until you've got a solid base and to me it looks like you're trying way to early to do that. Be a strong EE first, then build up stabbing to use Ash's power and petrify stabs.

Crawl is tempting me with +2,+2 Demon Whip of Pain at Lair 6. Stabbing petrified monsters with M&F gives about 40% of extra damage but I am not sure if it stacks with Pain brand. If it does, it can be superior to stabbing with dagger (112% at Stabbing 10). It looks like I don't stab much any way, at least Elephants and Death Yaks were killed by Stone Arrow. What do you think?

You should get some necromancy if you want to use that whip and given that you worship Ash that will be easier( plus it will help you towards necromut if it's available). Yes the stab damage does stack with pain (that is why Qblades of pain are amazing). Given that the attack speed of a DWhip you should use it if you find a spellbook with a necromancy spell in it.

I don't have any Necromancy spells yet so the demon blade is not that great :(
I am fully bound in magic now so I can uncurse my weapon if needed but Lair 8 is quite hard (I cannot melee packs of Death Yaks and LRD does not kill them fast) so I retreat often and I am back to 3 stars of piety. I will uncurse my weapon when I have Necro spell for training Necro. Killing Hydrae with Petrify is tricky, they resist the spell too often.

Edit: I uncursed my weapon. I still don't have Necro but I really like swapping protection/draining/holy/speed short blades. Protection is my default weapon (helps to survive ranged monsters). Holy has obvious purpose, draining is the best weapon for sleeping monster because it has highest damage, speed is for petrified ones because I cannot single-shot them.
Orcs 4 has wandering Saint Roka so I am going to explore dungeon.

Edit2: Trove requires +5, +5 Demon Whip. No, I am not going to give my +6,+6 demon whip of pain, I don't have another demon whip.

Pain brand and stabbing do work at the same time, but pain is a strait + to damage based on necromancy skill, not a percentage bonus, and is added after the fact, so the amount of extra damage done by pain isn't related to whether your stabbing or not. The only brands that particularly benefit from stabbing are the ones which are a 'percentage of the damage done' i.e. fire,cold,vorpal, holy, foo slaying

Demon whips do not benifit from stabbing.

There are three tiers of stabbing weapons:

Tier 1: Bonus base damage: Short blades (Daggers are a special case within tier 1, as they get the bonus with half the skill of other short blades)
Tier 2: Bonus % damage: Long blades (Short blades also get this bonus)
Tier 3: A slightly smaller % bonus: Spears, Tridents, Demon Tridents, Trishulas (Not all polearms), Clubs (not all maces and flails, just clubs, not even giant clubs) and felid unarmed attacks. (Long and short blades also get this bonus as well)

All stab attacks also bypass AC and EV so stabbing with a demon whip will at least do that much

To kill packs of death yaks at this point in the game, you probably need to pull them apart one at a time, and kill each one singly. Get one's attention and have it follow you upstairs, try to only bring one upstairs at a time. If you get more than one flee and rest up on the level above and try again. Don't be afraid to use consumables, or if it's too hard just come back later when you're more powerful.

Oh, wait, I'm lying :)
I just re-read the source, that's what I get for misremembering.

The mentioned weapons are tier 2 weapons, not tier 3 weapons, tier 3 are "all other weapons" so yes, you do get some bonus from stabbing with a whip.

Yes, I fought them one on one, it took long time and that's why my piety went down. I didn't risk to go upstairs with Death Yak, I think it can kill me in 2 shots. I usually retreated to upstairs and then used Stone Arrow while standing on the upstairs. If a monster is still alive and there is 1-2 spaces between us, I go upstairs.

Also I always was invisible when fighting Catoblepas, the character cannot kill it otherwise.

I found a ring of Inv so I don't use Petrify much. Here is my latest dump. Main problem is with Footaurs, especially with arrows of dispersal.
So I am going to train some Air for Deflect Missles (I don't want to wear wizardry ring).

Edit: I replaced conservation with gourmand, I almost died because of hunger (Inv and Haste require much food and LRD is not hungerless either).

The mentioned weapons are tier 2 weapons, not tier 3 weapons, tier 3 are "all other weapons" so yes, you do get some bonus from stabbing with a whip.


That's ok :) Since I don't have cursed weapon any more, I use daggers for stabbing. Unfortunately fsim cannot tell us what's better for stabbing - +8 Demon Whip or +4 dagger.

Well, I have a spreadsheet that I wrote from the source, that I plugged your data into.

But mostly the spreadsheet goes like this:

Figure out the average "attack" damage of the weapon, This is based on fighting, skills, weapon enchantment, slaying, and stats (Stats comprise a very small amount of this value (Typically < 1%) , and for the purposes of stabbing I just kinda fudge it because it was too much work to put in the spreadsheet)

The spreadsheet has a couple fill-in values for how the various bonus values are calculated, and totals them up, the dagger bonus based on your stabbing skill, the percentage values for each of the tiers, and the type of stabbing being done all figure into how much stabbing damage is done.

The percentages are multiplied by the average base damage and the result is what you see.

The whole thing is pretty long and complicated and I really don't want to go through each step of the spreadsheet in prose form, even if I am sitting around on a Saturday afternoon :)

I overestimated Deflect Missiles. I got hit several times but just thought that I was unlucky. I guess I should have trained more dodging. Once again I realized how important is rF+ and rC+. I could have rC+ instead of rPois but it would not help to avoid the death from flaming bolts.
I liked LRD, it is funny spell. I was not impressed by Iron Shot, it missed too often (maybe I had to train more Conjuration for it).
Stone Skin is useful spell but I felt lazy to cast it before this "easy" fight, I really expected the Yaktaur to die to LRD. Path to upstairs was blocked by another Yaktaur :(

I explored dungeron because Vaults was too dangerous.

LRD and Iron shot are kind of complimentary, the things that are susceptible to one, you'll have a very difficult time using the other on (specifically Iron Shot's very evadable, but punches through armour, LRD's un-evadable, but it's damage is reduced a LOT from AC) LRD isn't effective on all types of critters, Iron shot can hit anything, LRD hits an area for damage, Iron shot hits one critter.

It takes a little knowledge to know when one's better than the other in which situation, but after a while it's second nature.

And yes your conjuration was holding iron shot back, as a result you had 25% more power in LRD than you did in iron shot, so I'm not surprised you felt like LRD was more effective, because it probably was :)

Yes, this is tricky. Earth Magic feels unique, it is very different from other schools. Shatter is the only level 9 spell which I have never cast so this is not my last EE for sure :)

I played around with EE when I was on my spellcasting ogre binge, and found the school to be very unique but sandblast was so terrible compared to other first level elemental spells that I had to pass it up. Also air magic is so damnable useful it is hard to get far into earth. However the high level earth spells are cool and powerful enough to make me want to try a EE with better apts.

Sandblast with no stones wielded sucks, and is nearly useless outside D:1. With stones to fuel it, it keeps up with and even slightly exceeds most other level 1 spells (until you encounter something in chain/plate mail) If you wanna see something *really* fun, fueling your max-level sandblast with large rocks is a very amusing waste of large rocks (does more damage than your typical level 3-4 spell though)

I usually just fight melee on D:1-3 with my EE's unless I get an early large cache of stones, in a more common setup by the time I have enough stones to use sandblast regularly I've moved past it to higher level attack spells. Training some melee skills means I get rely a little less heavily on stone arrow too, which makes groups of critters much more survivable.

Yes. I noticed that sandblast can be fueled by large rocks and even used it a few times. Large rocks are worth their weight in gold to an ogre though so it is something I would never do again. On that note do you get something special with sticks to snakes and giant clubs?

Right, wiki says max damage for Stone Arrow is 3d11 while for Sandblast with stones it's 2d20 at the same spell power. My main concern with Sandblast is really limited range, it has range 1 if enemy is placed diagonally and range 2 for vertical/horizontal lines is not great either. So I believe it's best for hybrids while my DrEE was fragile pure caster.

Sandblast is incredibly powerful with stones. I found Temple on D7 using Sandblast only (I dived to D4 though).

I gave it a second try with a SEEE (still on .12 and all that) and yeah it's okay, but sometimes you can't find any stones. I still couldn't switch to stone arrow fast enough. The range is a pain to use and it doesn't have any redeeming gimmicks like freeze and zap have or extended range with spellpower like Flame Tongue. And I CBA to know the exact AC of every monster I encounter either.

The triple AC reduction from LRD is not that big of a deal since it never misses... but sandblast has nothing special like that other than it takes reagents and has less range. Oh and it's a single school spell, but that's hardly a big deal for a level 1 spell.

Yes, I had to use device recharge twice before temple. First monsters on D1 are the hardest.
