Public criticism of players based on their ghosts.

This is neither a suggestion nor criticism, but the other forum sections were even worse fits.

Most of the time when I bump into player ghosts I look into the circumstances of their demise. Often the players made several serious mistakes, both strategic and tactical.

Would it be inappropriate to post these morgues as YASD with comments?
My intention would not be to ridicule the players, but to point out mistakes. Of course I can't enforce that conduct on other forum users. The morgues are in the public domain so there should be no problem with using them.

Re: Public criticism of players based on their ghosts.

I wouldn't expect this to go anywhere useful, and it would almost certainly not be worth whatever energy you put in.

Probably nobody around here would be interested in the morgues of strangers who don't post here and who are not known to any of the players here. There's already a steady stream of posters putting up CIP and YASD posts with morgues where criticism can make an actual difference for a poster who has already expressed implicit interest in getting that criticism. Picking a random stranger off the public server to criticize probably won't help them because they won't find out, and even if they do find out eventually they probably won't appreciate your uninvited evangelism. It's not against the rules to go door-to-door to tell people about your philosophy of winning crawl, but you will probably get a better response if you have them come to you instead.

I suppose if you really wanted to you could stalk webtiles for them and ask them if they want advice, but good luck finding them, and you're likely to have a few hundred people say no thank you for every one who says ok. If you think this is a good use of your time...

I was hoping this was about calling out people with really offensive names when you run into their ghost, but then I suppose you'd just be giving them the attention they wanted in the first place...
Sorry, I just get so annoyed when I run into ghosts named DickSchlonger69 and the like...

Yeah I don't like inappropriate names either but that one carries sufficient irony that it made me laugh instead.

Although I haven't played online, I'd certainly welcome advice about what I could have done to not die. And I'd love to help others if I can.

Re: Public criticism of players based on their ghosts.

I don't think this is a good idea, not only is it public naming and shaming, but we also don't know the exact circumstances of why a given character died, maybe the player just didn't care anymore.

Edit: I could see a mentor/mentee program on a voluntary basis work.

Re: Public criticism of players based on their ghosts.

I think 90% of the advice would be things like "You should have walked away earlier" or "You should have used one of your teleport scrolls" or "Don't yolo against player ghosts"

At least, that's what 90% of my deaths could be attributed to. That and "don't let your cat run across your keyboard so much". Real life felids kill me more often than the ones in the game...

Re: Public criticism of players based on their ghosts.

I think it's pretty safe to say that if people want advice, they'll ask for it, and that doing "public criticism" doesn't seem like the sort of thing we want to encourage here.

Also, while I'm not going to try to move posts around from here, if you want advice go to DCA and if you want memes go to CYC. I'll leave the thread open in case someone wants to make an impassioned plea for the ability to post other people's morgues in order to tell them what they did wrong.
