Thoughts about the Quote button

The discussion about the Thank button continues and this makes me ask another thing.

Several times I wasn't happy about the way the Quote button was used. This concerns 1) quoting very long text and 2) quoting quoted quotes.

  1. PosterA writes some text containing 50 lines. PosterB quotes everything and just adds a line like "Well, I agree to most of what you have said but concerning X I think Y is better". So we have a very long post containing very little new information.

  2. PosterA writes something, posterB quotes posterA and adds something new, posterC quotes altogether and adds a new line etc. (How do you call this? The online dictionary supposes "pyramiding" quotes e.g.). Anyway, same as before, we can get a very long post with very little new information.
Has this been discussed before? If so, is it possible to deal with it?

There is a quote nesting limit. I believe it is configurable.
It's 3 right now

I think the answer to this one is: when it happens, let the poster know their quoting makes their message hard to read and how they might do better. I think non-mods can't edit posts for long after they're posted (maybe after they've been viewed?), but posters can feel free to ask mods to trim posts if needed.

As far as I know njvack, users can edit posts indefinitely, but only mods can delete them after a short period of time.
