Racism (Or at least, racist language) in CYC?

In this thread: https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=13738

It's odd to me that in a forum that's so super sensitive about issues of gender, the issue of racism doesn't concern the mods. I reported this thread, and no action has come, so I guess this sort of stuff is considered OK here?

I'm sure the posts were meant to be humorous, and the authors themselves aren't racist people, but stuff like that is definitely going to alienate anyone who's sensitive to racial issues... Do I need to make a 'How do we get more black people to play crawl' thread before people realize throwing around hyper racist terms probably isn't cool?

If that sort of stuff is allowed here, clearly this isn't a community I want to be associated with. I'm assuming the only reason the thread wasn't already closed is an oversight on the mod's part.

Yes, had lots of exams + editing work last week and this week, and it just so happens njvack & other mods weren't checking in either. Did a quick clean up of lots of spammers/spambots, in addition to deleting the stupid (even for CYC) thread you linked to, which had received reports from others as well. When the cat is away...

I figured as much, I was honestly shocked that it was still up today.

I mean, like I said, I'm sure there wasn't ill intent behind it, but it really seemed crazy that that would be allowed here.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks for the great job of moderation you (and nvjack) do. You guys do a great job of playing the part of neutral moderators, while also posting your own opinions, seemingly without conflict (somehow). That's quite impressive.

Re: Racism (Or at least, racist language) in CYC?

just posting up here, had some minor mindfucks because of that stuff too, but i know the ones who posted it didnt mean any harm with it.

still u should be aware that was serious trigger material and maybe not post stuff like that again.. / the "artists" dont deserve being called artists imo, and no one should help spreading such material.

im here to play the game, and talk about the game. not about sensitive topics like racism/fascism/sexism which are hard to handle out of my mother language

it just feels sometimes in this forum people like argueing about stuff like that more, and a lot of YASDs/CIPs fly by uncommented/ignored

also because i dont want to contribute to negativity, about my 3 posts in GDD i just feel bad myself about them, they were badly prepared and didnt seem productive the next day - so i removed them ;) sorry for that i'm manic sometimes - i just played too much and took a break!

also thanks to and into (and the other mod which i didnt read much sorry) for real sensitive work in this forum

edit: sure im usually all philosophical liberalist, i just won't read crazy yiuf anymore and its all cool. big part of my motivation to post this is to clarify my point of view, because it might have affected others and i was negative last week ;). i dont want to teach anyone (not that i'd be able to) its meant as inspiration/proposition only and i didnt know where else to put it

Re: Racism (Or at least, racist language) in CYC?

Thanks OpMo^Xom. I do take your point about discussions regarding sexism and racism. This is a game community forum and that should be the main focus obviously, as that's the thing we all share as participants. However, I think if enough people here legitimately want to discuss a serious topic, especially if it is related to "game culture" in general, then some scope can be provided for that. An occasional introspective and serious thread doesn't hurt anything, and perhaps even is good for our collective psyche. The other side of the coin is that occasional silly threads in CYC that are not strictly related to Crawl are also fine, provided they aren't spam or something. (I also take your point about the fact that for many posters on Tavern, English is not their first language.)

There do tend to be periods of more or less posting in YAVP, GDD, etc., but I think that is a result of the cycle of DCSS game development as well as the cycle of the seasons (I think a good number of posters here are students, so summer tends to have larger total volume of posts on average).
