Edit Post Time Limit

I think it's a pretty widely disliked feature that the edit button disappears a few short minutes after making a post.

Can we remove this feature, or at least make the time limit more generous?

This would be especially relevant in the context of ongoing or collected ideas, like Things that should be more transparent or guides. In these cases, an ability to edit the OP and allow selected other to do so as well would be particularly helpful. [/daydreaming]

I don't think Tavern is such a place where editing a post over and over again can cause problems.

There're places where such feature might be useful (such as forums where hostility is frequently found for some reason). But I don't think Tavern is one of them.

I'll look into it and see if I can figure it out.

Just noticed that editing is open! Thank you danr and mageykun! :D

Testing editing. Where is the "reason-for-editing doohickey?"

No probl. That was just a default setting and as a mod I didn't even realize it because I always have the ability to edit everything.

I don't like to allow unlimited time to modify posts. People should think before they post. 5 minutes should be enough to correct typos afterward. This also often leads to useful posts being deleted, just because someone got too angry, and, since this form of forum generally only allows linear discussions, replies run out of context then.

But I'm ok with whatever you decide, Danr, of course.

I was seeing a lot of comments that people were annoyed by the time limit. I see Napkin's point too though. Now that I've already made the change I'd like to see how it goes - if there's a new problem we can reconsider.

I think though that people will refrain from editing inappropriately. If you have major new points that you want people to see, you will make a new post anyway.

I recall seeing on other forums a "last edited time" display that shows up with the post... is that feature available on this forum software?

It shows up if you enter a reason for editing.

Edit: see?

Where does one enter a reason for editing? I just see the standard posting screen.

Maybe it's a mod only feature. Below the text window, there's the options and upload attachment tabs. At the bottom of options, there's a "Reason for editing this post" text field.

That's just a moderator thing, yeah.
