Assassin is not a particularly good stabber; they just get some needles and a blowgun. En is the canonical stabber start.

For the OP, being surrounded by six vanilla orcs would not really have been much more survivable than priests. IIRC jiyva early is pretty okay (found an altar early once), neutral jellies are really strong and you can summon them at * and slimify is basically a one hit KO for nearly anything you would rather not fight.

A no scrolls species sound good to me. IMO, curses and amnesia are the only things you really need to provide for (you can win with bad gear, use-identify items, and do without escape items), but being stuck with an item or spell you don't want would suck. I remember spectating a game once where the player entered an ice cave and there were a ton of ice beasts and the player did some weird movement tricks to kill all of them 1v1 when I would have immediately bailed and I realized I was just completely hopeless at the game.

I'd take it a step further and say that non-tactical consumables shouldn't take up inventory space at all. What's the gameplay benefit of needing to wander off to grab those enchant scrolls?

I would suggest:

* Dropping an identified consumable removes it from autopickup
* Picking up an identified consumable adds it to autopickup

If I come out of that trove and don't pick those brilliance potions up again, I was probably only carrying them because I hadn't bothered to drop them yet.
