Necromutation is the best spell in the game because it removes things that shouldn't be in the game from the game.

Dying because you can't drink potions or use the actually broken level 8 necromancy spells is a small cost to pay in comparison.

You can already create a gap between you and the monster using that one weird weapon trick.

Hepliaklqana doesn't seem like an especially awful god, but it does have an especially awful mechanic in forbidding worship from a completely random species for virtually no reason and to the detriment of gameplay experience. As a principle, Crawl currently auto-identifies almost any item that you can manually deduce the identity of due to circumstances.

This sounds like an edge-case that should be fixed, possibly by auto-identifying all equipment in monster hands (as is currently the case with weapon brands).

An alternative: +4 Torpor Shell [ponderous+++, slowmonsters], base item is large shield.

Slows everything in sight, but lowers your movement speed massively so that you can't run away from most things even if they're slowed, and needs substantial shields investment. Still very powerful, though.
