Call them trapdoor elves, make them fast, and have them surface like trapdoor spiders. Also prevents problems with killholing them because when one surfaces, all of them on LoS should also surface, so you're fighting either no elves or all the elves.

I think we can achieve perfect balance by transforming elliptic into a caustic shrike and setting him loose on whoever disagrees with the direction taken with the game.
