Re: YASD: Shafts can go F**K themselves

shafts are fairly easy to spot if you have a couple levels of traps and doors...I'd level it up to 5 or so very early on, then turn it off for a while and get up to 12 or so later on.

Forgive me for asking the obvious, but you don't actually stab with needles, correct? You're switching to a blowgun, firing, and then switching back to a dagger before stabbing? Just making sure I'm not missing something.

Re: YASD: DDBe died at level 20, a personal best :)

I honestly feel like Trog's god gifts weaken him as a god choice in the long term. Sure, the first 5-10 are nice, but afterwards you're unlikely to get something better, although there's always some chance. But the repeated gifting just makes it very hard to break into 6 stars and beyond, which lowe...

Re: YASD: DDBe died at level 20, a personal best :)

I seem to have really, really beaten the odds on my next DDBe, then...I'll probably put up a CIP at some point tomorrow, I don't have the time to play much today. But the short version is he got banished to the abyss in a freak accident at level 13 (agnes dispersal weapon) and managed to stay long e...

ah yeah you're right, I checked my mutations page, and I picked up -1 int. Not sure which creature did it, but it isn't a big problem for me, I'm a berserker anyways ;) hope to find a cure mutation soon though, I have some other ones as well I need removed :)

Permanent int loss possible in the abyss?

So I had the wonderful misfortune of being banished to the abyss at level 13, and figured I'd stay and get the rune. It went well and I succeeded, but I had a few too many run-ins with brain eaters. I entered with 8 int, and soon was at scores such as 6(8), etc. But when I got down to 3 current int,...

Re: List your favourite builds

I'm surprised no one has mentioned DDBe yet...They are very resilient, between the heavy armor and damage resistance. Limited options and you're basically stuck with pure melee, but as a newbie they are very good for learning the game. I just got my first ever rune with one...the abyssal rune. Got b...

Re: CIP: DDBe level 16, some Trog problems, need tips

This means that it is almost never good to use it for healing if you have some other source (in this case, you have a DD with 9 mp and 18 healing potions in its inventory). But is the only renewable source; once those MP are gone I'll never get them back. It'll reduce the amount of god gifts I get,...

alright, I'll cut off axes at 22....I do have slings at 8, crossbows at 2, and throwing at 1. I will try dropping all of my launchers for a while and see if that will stop it. Throwing isn't at 8, but I have recieved darts...I even got a bow back when I was still getting weapons, but thankfully he w...

Re: CIP: DDBe level 16, some Trog problems, need tips

I'm wondering if there might be something else going wrong...returning to my game today after I kill certain mobs I'm getting a "You feel guilty." message. I just attacked with my battleaxe of electrocution, I haven't cast anything, so I'm not sure what's going on. First a giant amoeba, th...

Re: CIP: DDBe level 16, some Trog problems, need tips

Just keep on killing, and don't forget to sacrifice the corpses that you don't eat. Even with liberal use of Trog's Hand, your net piety should be increasing for decent chunks of this phase of the game. The problem is trog is very reliably gifting me ammo, which then takes my next 31-49 points of p...

YASD: DDBe died at level 20, a personal best :)

Doing pretty well on my DDBe, level 16, cleared out the dungeon to around 16, lair to 7, all of orcish mines, hive (playing 9.1), and going through the vaults now (up to level 3). Since I'm deep dwarf, I use trog's hand quite often for the healing, but this is causing problems. I have high enough pi...

Re: CIP KoBe of Nemelex: pushing my luck

I haven't gotten to zot myself or done post endgame so I can't really comment there, but I really don't see why you wouldn't want to get rid of the shout/-10%hp/-10%mp when you've got 5 potions of cure mutation. Maybe if you only had one potion, but you've got plenty. I don't think you'll need all o...

Re: YASD: DDBe, died immediately after getting the *perfect*

It's more like I'm a greedy-minded player. If I succeed in using the axe to heal, I save the piety I would have used on trog's hand. I try to converse resources a great deal; unfortunately roguelikes tend to reward players who play a good bit safer than I do :) I'll learn one day...

YASD: DDBe, died immediately after getting the *perfect* axe

So I was having trouble keeping my life high because I'm not that experienced, having already recharged my healing wand several times, when trog finally gifts me my first weapon...It's a +0, +6 VAMPIRIC broad axe. I'm a deep dwarf, remember....I was so happy I started running around trying to regen ...

Re: new to spriggan casters, some questions

I appreciate all the thought out responses though :) I will definitely go bucklers, and I wish my last semi-successful mage was still around - he had an artifact sabre with flame, rF+ and +int, on like dungeon level 5 no less ;) but due to being fairly newbish he still didn't make it too far. Aside ...

new to spriggan casters, some questions

Should my spriggan be using shields/weapons/ranged weapons? Right now I'm going venom mage, but I've also played around with air/earth mages. I have found bucklers and figure the additional slot would be nice to have for when I eventually find quality ones, but are even +0 bucklers good to use? Woul...

Alright, good to know. I'm training some long blades for now, but I think I might go back to short blades. I have a +3/+3 sabre of speed which is very strong, the electrocution weapons are nice but they are much slower.

Trog gifted me a weapon type I have 0 skill in...bug?

I'm playing a KoBe and I have 13 skill in SHORT blades, with 3 in maces that I started with, 4 unarmed, and no other melee skills. Trog's first weapon gift was an elven long sword of electrocution, which is a long blade. Is that supposed to happen? would it make any sense to start training long blad...

Still focusing on trying to learn the game with kobold berserkers, although I'm thinking I might try spriggan enchanters soon, they seem popular, and I do like intrinsic speed ;) But as for this KoBe, here's his dump: Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.9.1 character file. 1386 Tasonir the Nimble (le...

Um, one last "don't" for now: try not to use the wiki as your main source of information about the game. It is horribly outdated/horribly misinforming (I am familiar with the kobe guide and I can tell you it is both). A more reliable source would be: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots...

CIP - Looking for tips on equipment choices

So I'm fairly new to DCSS, although I have some (limited) nethack experience, and have been doing fairly well in early dungeon levels. My current level 10 Kobold Berserker is on dungeon 9 and is making his first stash as I am finally getting a large amount of (possibly) useful items, and I'm not sur...
