It was changed to be proportional to the damage you dealt. Getting the last hit doesn't matter anymore.

HOLY. SHIT. I think I've just found the best randart ever generated in a DCSS game. N - the +11 great mace "Tasu Thra" {vamp, +Rage rF++ MR+} To make it even more sweet, I've found this in Lair:4 on a DDNe speedrun. If I manage to fuck this one up, I swear I'm uninstalling Crawl for good.

If you use a shield you'll lose your offhand auxiliary attack. On an unarmed character, that can be a pretty significant source of damage (unlike other aux attacks, offhand punches scales with UC skill).
