If you play on console (ssh to the server), all the shafts look like "^". That would also solve the problem. (Yes, I have a vendetta against webtiles on rougelikes)

Onget, if you don't like tab, then play a mage background. As a bonus, I find most conjuror-type backgrounds (Cj, FE, IE, even Wz, etc) are quite capable of killing Sigmund after D3. Mages play differently enough that the early game doesn't always feel the same.

The devs went on a zealot purge awhile back, with most zealots removed because of the reasons in the OP. The remaining zealots are all there for a reason. Be for easy mode, CK for Xom challenge mode, AK for unique game style, as finding Lugonu in D is rare.

In my experience, Sif's channeling is more useful after a fight than during a fight. Sif's channeling is pretty weak turn-wise and gives enemies lots of extra turns to hit you. When playing a squishy caster, it's much safer to retreat than give enemies 2-3 free hits. Per fireball. Which you might ne...

Anyway, I'm in the camp that thinks a correctly designed rougelike should idealy be winnable no matter what the game throws at you. Yes, you occasionally get nethack's gnome-with-the-wand-of-death, but those should be very, very rare.

Re: The alternative to pillar dancing is dying

The arguments I'm hearing about removing pillar dancing seem odd to me. The proponents seem to be claiming that having pillar dancing being possible in the game somehow detracts from their enjoyment of it. There is a simple solution to this problem: If you don't like pillar dancing, don't use it in ...

Because using a skill 0 weapon becomes useless mid-lair. And training the weapon skill doesn't actually increase survivability (thus sub-optimal) as it's only used to mop up in situations where you could just run away to regen MP.

Irradiate is useful for a Cj if you were stupid and got surrounded.

Force lance is also decent on a Cj-type character because you'd want to train both schools anyway and the breathing room very useful for squishy mages.

Actually, in Nethack, hallucination was rather trivially solved by a common item, so it wasn't really all that nasty. But making 'Mislead' more common in Crawl might be interesting.

In that case, you could try a faster than normal race like Ce, Te, Sp, or I guess Fe--these generally have lower defenses that force you to run away more often, and you can get away with running even after you've put yourself in a dangerous situation because you're fast. I think I'm dying with the melee characters because I don't know when to run away from a fight. With a DE mage, fights tend to be very bipolar: you either win or lose by a large margin. Playing a magic background relying only on summons or conjurations for damage is suboptimal, but doable and not too hard (imo). The first character I ascended was a DEIE of Sif Muna. I don't see why a non-pure "blaster caster" would need lvl 9 spells in a 3 rune game. If conjurations is your only way of dealing damage, then sure it's necessary. Otherwise, that xp could be spent somewhere else to increase your character's survivability.
