I just took a break for about three or four weeks after a particularly painful, prolonged bout of teh Stoopid (killed half a dozen characters of various strengths in a few hours, starting with a Zotsplat).

I feel much better now, and I'm certainly playing better again!

Swings and roundabouts. It's certainly harder to hide and rest up, but running away is much more effective: the lines of sight change often enough that you can escape pursuers completely, reasonably often. Get in a corner or hall and stay stationary I find that if I use a hall, one of them inevitably blinks behind me and cuts off my escape route. Then another one comes into view and then I get eaten. If you are playing badly enough, you can start your day with a Zotsplat, and your sixth and final death of the day can be getting one-shotted by Edmund with a +4 Flail of Crushing.

At this point, you should seriously stop playing Crawl for a while.

It's possible to get all the way through the main game, down to Zot:4, without finding rElec or rMut, and only one pip of rF and rC. Then you can totally die.

I've almost lost my Australian accent (it was never that strong, my home town of Adelaide has a fairly neutral accent to start with), apparently I have acquaintances who thought I was English until told otherwise.

I actually like combat wombats the most - load up on armour, get a big hurty weapon of choice, and run around whacking things with it.

Yeah, certainly it's just a matter of personal taste. I guess if that's the least fun I can find a vault, then that bit of the game is in pretty good shape!

I'd like to add the early, early Jiyva altar vaults with multiple jellies. At levels when jellies are a huge threat by themselves if you're not a Spriggan with a sling and plenty of stones or a lucky wand. Oozes would probably be more appropriate there. I like those! That depends, a lot. Bolt of Magma is OK, and Fire Storm is brilliant. The former is good when you have a lot of investment in Fire or Earth already and need a mid-level blaster but don't have much else; the latter needs a lot of focus. And to focus, it has to be worth investing in Conjurations and ...

I still like Sludge Elves and Demonspawn. The former seem like an unobvious combo doe to the -2 Conjurations aptitude, but turns out to be effective in different ways. The latter are just generally awesome :)

I know you found the entrance, but: +1 on taking Ash. The curse thing is actually pretty user-friendly, and the powers you get are really awesome all the way through the game.

What I have learnt... Fear potions of greater poison. REALLY fear them. I lost a lvl16 MDFi of Oka with great gear by randomly identifying my remaining items... Came across one of these with no healing pots =S I think this can be distilled down to "if you are quaff-IDing potions, Cute Mutation...

I've had good results with unarmed combat and Chei, but I wouldn't call it 'recommended'.

Have also made it to the endgame with two pure-melee Yredelemnul worshippers (splatted both of them on the Orb run, but that wasn't Yred's fault)! Lugonu also OK but the play style can be a bit odd.

It is entirely possible to encounter (and be killed by, though that part was panic) a Vault Guard on D:11.

No, it doesn't.

It's not as bad as the Wiki, but I've certainly been burnt by out-of-date learndb entries before. "Perfectly" is a strong statement :)

Your ridiculously powerful conjurator can die, even in the Vestibule of Hell, if you don't pay close attention to what you're doing (especially if it's not what you thought).

This will cause you to cry bitter tears of frustration at your own shortcomings.

http://i39.tinypic.com/2eku5w7.png A zombie fungal colony. It's got no ballistomycetes. I just had this happen as well. There were multiple (3?) sleeping spores on the level, the individual colonies didn't go away until I'd killed them all. Not sure if this is a bug, but it was surprising.

OK, so even with rPois, I can now occasionally be poisoned, regardless. This seems reasonable. Does it apply to poison-resistant monsters too?
