Zot and early game are pretty great in terms of balance, as it stands, though you could probably take Zot down to 3 levels.

You really want a wand of hasting — on future acquirements choose wand.
I'd just stick with Trog honestly. I'd also upgrade to a two-handed axe — has Trog gifted you an antimagic battleax or executioner's axe?

The conventional advice for a novice player rolling up a HOBe would probably be to use the axe with the highest base damage. This has nothing to do with broad axes being terrible weapons or whatever (they aren't).

Infinite ammo eliminates any drawback to ranged combat. "Ammo always mulches" would also solve the ammo pickup issue. (Number of bolts/arrows/etc. generated can be tweaked alongside this change, obviously.)
