Solved in the only way possible.

Eggplants predate Spelunky (and Stone Soup for that matter!), and describe invalid missiles. They were also hysterical raisins for a while, apparently.

Piety and invocations, like a lot of god abilities: failure = 80 - (you.piety / 25) - you.skill(SK_INVOCATIONS, 4);
(Not actually a percentage, abilities succeed when random2avg(100,3) >= failure).

It's a bug that should be fixed now, yes. I learnt my lesson of meddling with such terrifying things that I don't understand and have left the matter of deciding which pictures are better than the other pictures to the experts instead!
