Thanks for all the advice. I've found that lava orcs make the best chaos knights so I've been sticking with them. Also felids are decent because they can just abandon xom and wait out the wrath (since they have slow hunger and can eat until engorged).

The automatic system doesn't work because it leads to stuff like going to the Temple and blinking over and over just to level up Translocations. Why would you want to do that if you didn't have to? hungerless channeling? that's the very first thing people tested in wiz mode... and the stronger channeling items are disabled anyway.

realistically it's not like you could just tank + channel to be unkillable. if you're taking that little damage per turn then you might as well just tab dudes.
