If the geography is right, you might throw a rock at it from max range, run for the stairs with it chasing you, go up, mark the level so that you'll remember that there's a shadow dragon there, come down a different staircase, and sneak into the Lair that way.

There should be three branches that begin in the Lair, out of 4 possibilities: the Swamp, the Shoals, Snake Pits, Slime Pits.

If you've got Shoals, Snake, and Slime, you've got your 3, and there isn't a Swamp.

I don't know if you could have won with berserk. I'll run my experiment again, when I get a little more time, with your actual stats and skills -- I had misguessed how high your skills would be, when I set them all to 11.

I've had single orcs and band of orcs in the Lair, while clearing it. I've never seen any respawns of humanoid monsters, however.

This leads me to believe that once you've cleared a level, the respawns will only be animals.
