One more tip: if you feel low on food do not go to Slime. That is a branch which strictly reduces your reserves. There are no edible corpses, no food generated (except maybe in the treasure at the end), most likely you need to cast and rest a lot.

I think it is an important observation, because it is a cause of many deaths in crawl: there are a huge number of relatively easy enemies, and then suddenly an unexpectedly hard one turns up and kills you.

I am not really convinced that the power gap between level 6 spells and level 9 spells are that important here. Whether they are optimal or not, would not really change if you half the number of monsters and double the XP for them.

In crawl the niche of "fragile spellcaster" theme is quite well covered, with really similar aptitudes like the ones proposed.

But why do you think that crawl encourages hybridization? You really do not need 20 different methods to kill monsters. Besides, in my experience level 6 spells are online after dungeon+lair, about at least 10 levels before you enter vaults, and by that time you can cast all low level utility spells...
