Re: Gifts of Okawaru

Okawaru grants pretty sweet abilities and this is the main reason I follow him. But I surely was hoping for some usable gifts as well. If this is standard situation with him, I think I'll prefer Trog next time. Yeah, this. The gifts are nice, but the abilities are the main draw. Although, it's real...

Re: I love it when...

A vengeful Okawaru sends a frost giant to strike me down while I'm touring Ashenzari's zoo on D:7 because I IDed a scroll of immolation right after casting Sticks to Snakes on the previous floor.

Re: YAVP #2! High Elf Fire-Conjurer of Jivya ^w^

Man, you really know how to spin a tale! The enthusiasm you experience during play is so blatantly made apparent in your victory posts -- they tend remind me of one of the primary reasons Crawl's utter lack of backstory appeals to my desire to interact with the game on a conceptual level: it's up to...

Re: Revisions to boring or redundant monsters

Multiple-tile centipedes sound interesting. Having an insect that can lengthen itself to potentially block your access to a corridor or the stairs would prompt you to reassess the situation as soon as you see a centipede amongst a pack of monsters.

Re: You still haven't won yet?

Since I first discovered Crawl in October 2011, the closest I've come to winning was getting my MfGl of Fedhas eviscerated on Shoals: 5 (after I'd already defeated Ilsuiw) by an impaler wielding a demon trident of electrocution. Next time when I'm attempting to set up a death trap for the javelineer...

Re: God Proposal: Ahca the God of Health

Resquiid Sounds cool, but I have two questions: 1. How would vampires be affected by this god, if at all, considering that their mode of consumption is drinking rather than eating? 2. Would players gain extra piety for killing mummies in approximately the same way Troglodytes do for killing mages? ...

Recite starts to become deadly (against humanoids) once you get invocations past 9 or so; it's useful for incapacitating rooms full of baddies, if you can sneak up on them for a good position. Make sure to give yourself enough space from enemies since it takes four turns to complete a sermon.

Re: Macros and Humans: a lesson in anthropology

The most consistent macros I use are numpad / --> o and ` --> p

For </>, I switch between 1/2 and */-. However, X treats neither of these pairs as commands invoking </>, but rather their default functions.

Re: YASD: SENe of Kiku

Evocations is really a waste of XP in the early game. When you find scrolls of teleport, use them if you are in danger (also scrolls of blink, fear, potions of invis, speed etc.) Don't need to turn on dodging so early too. For missile weapons, look for javelins and slings (especially branded). No n...

Re: DCSS Text Improvement Taskforce

I just noticed that the quotation for mermaids in the spreadsheet is about sirens. Is that ideal, given that sirens also exist in the game? If you can find a good mermaid quote, put that in for mermaid and switch the current quote to siren. I believe I've located an adequate quotation on mermaids f...

I'm halfway done a hymn for Zin and will start one for Fedhas soon.

The grammar for the descriptions of the altars is a little wonky. I'll work on that too.

yeah, for some reason I had forgotten about that. Somewhere along the line I developed the line of thinking that a 100% failure rate listed for each spell in the "to memorize" repository meant that I wouldn't be able to get them down...guess I dun goof'd. I was consistently wearing the rin...

YASD: SENe of Kiku

This is probably the third time I've ever played a necromancer -- or an elf, for that matter -- and I've only visited the lair four times, so when I managed to catch a glimpse of the stairs to the midgame with a build I'm barely familiar with, I admit that I got a little excited. A blowgun + poison ...

Re: Which version do you play? Tiles or Console/ASCII

ASCII. The monochromity is the main appeal: the gameplayic simplicity of using symbols to represent the characters is a benefit unto itself. Plus the whole semiotics behind the symbols and the colour: the blackness between envelopes the player in the dungeon's darkness!

Ambient techno if I'm trying to survive past the temple; trance if I want to feel all fatalistic and spiritual while playing.

EDIT: I find myself frequently opening up this loop, actually.

I would also like to know which gods are beneficial for Kenkus. So far I've had some good experiences with Okuwaru and Makhleb, but then again, currently I'm not a good enough player to make it past the early dungeons.
