For normal people, part of what makes crawl fun -- rather than a Go-like ultimate test of pure skill -- is that some runs will be easier than others thanks to randomness. So it's OK that sometimes you will get a big boost from a couple portal vaults.

If you are determined to farm, farm the first level of a hell branche, whichever one has the least tormenters. Never step off the up-portal.

However, even that is dumb. If you are too weak to do extended without farming, that is nature's way of telling you not to do extended.

Drain is barely relevant on 99% of items to begin with. Either its trash that drains you zero or one times when you ID it, or it's good enough to never swap out.

As drawbacks go, it's up there with "-1 Dex", with an extra dose of "fuck you for wear-IDing items in the early game".

Remove the Evocations boost to max mana

Currently most evokable items use little or no mana.

Evocations skill is already quite powerful; there's no need for it to have the side effect of giving bonus mana shield if you're one of those characters who ignores spellcasting and inovcations.

Yes, the elite players can streak terrible races and combos, but if you just want a respectable streak (five), you should be pairing beefy races like Ho and Mi and Mf with backgrounds from the left two columns.
