Re: The 'Questions too small to need their own thread' threa

I know that Trolls should go unarmed in melee. Is the same true of Centaurs and Minotaurs? I'm looking at the Unarmed formula on the knowledge bot, but it's quite hard to figure out and compare to weapons. Also, I'm currently playing a Centaur Transmuter, and having a tough time trying to decide whi...

Re: The 'Questions too small to need their own thread' threa

Once I've learned all the spells in a particular book, is it safe to drop that book?

It's been a while :) Call Of Cthulhu was always my favourite.

Re: I joined the 100 club...

Thanks for the info. Even with the staff I was tearing through ogres and ice beasts, so I figured it was all good. One of the things I like about DCSS is that you don't get exact damage reports ("moderately wounded" etc.) so you have to go a bit by 'feel' rather than number crunching. More...

Re: I joined the 100 club...

Even with the +5 armour buff? That was the reason I was using it.

...and killed by something called an armour mimic on D:9. Still, I poked my head into the Orcish mines (and quickly back out again) and received a gift from Trog (a staff like the one I already had, only not as good), both firsts for me. Progress!

Re: I joined the 100 club...

If you really want to see the lair, Troll Berserker will get you there. Fight unarmed, berkserk if you feel threatened. Eat everything so that you can berserk when you need to. Don't forget that Trog's Hand will stack with your innate regen and BiA will help you with anything you can't handle by yo...

I joined the 100 club...

Well, here I am. 100 characters down, bloodied but unbowed. My 100th was actually my worst, a Hill Orc Monk who scored 2 points and got killed by a hobgoblin in short order. The first couple of beasties I killed with a single kung fu kick, so I got overconfident... Best so far: DDWa, 2666 points, XL...

Re: How do I deal with my ghosts?

I've never managed to successfully use Dispel Undead on them, so I'd assumed that didn't work. My two most successful characters so far have been a Mummy and a Vampire, so maybe I should try a Ghoul. Living gets old!

Thanks all, most appreciated!

How do I deal with my ghosts?

I love this game, but I still haven't been able to progress past D7. And my prime cause of death is now my old characters' ghosts. The ghosts tend to be fast, so out-running them is not usually successful. The best I can generally manage is to stay one step ahead, which just prolongs the agony. They...

Re: The 'Questions too small to need their own thread' threa

How many characters did people go through before making significant progress? So far I've had 20 and I've made it beyond XL4 three times. My best character was a VpAs who made XL7 before getting killed by Prince Ribbit on D:6 (no chance to run). I assume in general that I'm not being cautious enough...

Things I've learned in the day I've been playing...

Don't use random wands against crystal walls, for lightning may kill you.

Sometimes, when at low HP, beleaguered and potionless, you should turn and fight rather than run. But you will never know when until it is too late.

Re: Newbie Advice Please

Hey all. I just started playing this game and am finding it to be one of the most accessible and intriguing roguelikes I've yet encountered. I'm only on Dungeon 3 but am very much enjoying it. Anyway, I have a question. Am I right in thinking that once one's inventory is full the only thing to do is...
