It is, but Crawl doesn't have a way to tell players which are areas that are difficult to get to, and which are areas that are impossible to get to.

Sac Love is not great for winning but is great for not needing to deal with allies

They're not just meant to make *you* more vulnerable, they also make *other monsters* more vulnerable to hexes. Super useful if you use hexes or have a hex wand and have a high-MR monster you want to affect.

Ideally you'd like to use them on an eveningstar. You have a pretty ok chance of finding one in the hall of blades on elf2. I'm pretty sure the rules are not simple, consistent, or explained anywhere.

I don't think there's any case where it's random, though, and IIRC you get a warning before doing most things that may anger your allies.

Note that "don't train bows" doesn't mean "don't use the longbow;" it's 100% worthwhile softening up dangerous targets with arrows while they approach. Since you don't have any other use for enchant weapon scrolls, enchant the freeze bow up as you can.

Free turn wouldn't include attacks, but yeah — for large packs it could be surprising and not very fun. Your "back of the line" idea is a better idea.

Yeah, enter the abyss is a fantastic "get out of dead free" card. Make sure you keep enough MP on-hand to use it, and enough HP so that if you enter the abyss somewhere bad you won't die.
