Quick advice to give: use teleport traps to escape hairy situations if you dont have tele scrolls or tele wand.
Also when exploring new dungeon level, when you find stairs down, check them fast to see if area down there is clear so you can retreat there if needed.

Try Death Knight (DK) background; you train your skills like fighter, but you have summons to help you to get through.

Shift+x, then e (at wanted location) will set exclusion;
shift+x then ctrl+e will remove exclusion.

Btw I think you wont find any better items in the Abyss (at the start) then you'll find on the D:1 floor.
Started to avoid Elven Halls for the same reason :) Noticed (while looking morgues of others players) that people avoid Elves too.

Fire Magic is your primary spell school so stick with it. If you find Bolt of Fire learn it. You can get Iskenderun's Mystic Blast and/or Iron Shot for fire resistant monsters, later on you can add Orb of Destruction. Translocation is always good to have for Ctele and Cblink, just dont overtrain it....

It may be waste of turn, depend on situation.
Sometimes when Im retreating, my summons follow me, so I use t-a to make them attack/distract things which are chasing me.

Start as an Hill Orc Monk for easier pre-temple, pre-lair game, when you get Elyvilon your piety will be **(because of Monk background), then sacrifice all weapons/ammo you found along the way, and soon you'll have piety *** :)

Orbs aren't the only things that need to be drawn around corners -- using terrain against monsters is crawl 101. But even presupposing that a player doesn't know that, they could learn that it's seen as an obvious choice by reading duvessa's post -- or one of the various other posts in this thread ...

If you train Fire Magic (Fire Elementalist) and wear freezing weapon you will have slightly casting penalty for fire spells, cool :)
(Fireball 6% ---> Fireball 10% with freezing mace on)

I would train and wear buckler because Condensation Shield eventually will melt if you are hit with fire.
