Re: Request for Updated Walkthroughs

First, in response to the original question, I have brought http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Majang's_Caster_Walk-Through up to version 20, in one fell swoop jumping three versions. Second, as the writer of a walkthrough, I want to spill some ink on the question as to why I would spend time and effort on...

Re: So You're Finally Getting Farther in the Game

I give my casters bucklers when I find good ones with extra resistances, or even well enchanted artefacts. Why well enchanted? A +0 buckler with rF+ and rPois is a no go? Basically I don't care about enchantment of artifact bucklers because it still gives quite low SH (comparing to typical EV of ca...

Re: So You're Finally Getting Farther in the Game

I appreciate Mikee's point that to a novice (and for a long time, to me) having a shield was giving a false sense of security. Probably it came from visualizing some kind of Roman soldier behind his impenetrable shield. They won their battles with their shields, and boy, in Crawl I definitely wanted...

Re: Does contamination do anything?

I did have malmutations from contamination. I like playing casters with a high emphasis on level 9 spells, and having two miscasts in a row, even with 10% fail rate, happens at least once per game. I think one of the hells also kept contaminating you (Tartarus?), and it may have been a mummy curse o...

I'm playing a DsEE, clearing out the Labyrinth on a Lair level. And then Minotaur drops this beauty: the ring "Ojytites" rPois MP+9 Int+4 Slay+2 SInv. I just can't think of any reason to ever get this thing off my finger. I can't believe such a thing exists!

Re: When is switching gods the correct choice?

In the old days, changing to TSO from whatever you worshipped before to make it through the post-end-game branches was a good idea, as TSO was somewhat difficult to worship in the early game. But nowadays you can build up piety with him really early, so you could pick him right away. As a caster, Ve...

Re: CiP- DsGl of Usk. What should I do for Ranged?

You should consider going into earth magic. You have the night-stalker mutation, which plays well with the short-ranged, but powerful one-shot solutions Earth Magic gives you. No swapping is needed before you shoot. But you need to train three skills (SC, conjurations and earth), which is much steep...

Re: Every time I start training Stealth, the character dies

When I'm playing a caster, I'm spreading my skill training thin enough already without going for stealth. I think it's a waste of good experience. When your spells are more powerful, they are also more likely to hit. Training the relevant spell kills seems therefore a better investment.

Usually, from the beginning of the game, I decide on two damage-dealing spell schools for my blaster. Especially when starting as an FE, which seems to be a good school to get going in the game, I want another school for the inevitable crimson imps and much worse stuff later on. Just relying on fire...

It also helps to analyse your deaths. Whenever you get to some place for the first time, you'll see new monsters, and they might kill you in entirely new ways. Don't be frustrated, but see these as learning experiences. Try to read what happens when you die, look up the monsters that kill you on the...

Instead of turning it into a bolt, one might also consider making it unmissable, like a high-powered magic dart, reducing its damage to compensate for that. That would probably justify its level 8 status.

Even when you are terrible at melee, these silence spectres are not too difficult to bring down, as long as you survive the crowd long enough that surrounds them. You need to prioritize the silence-sources aggressively, and try to lure them away from most of their support. And it helps to have a few...

...especially in situations where enemies' EV is high. Fire Storm is much better than LCS to knock out orbs of fire. Granted, at low power LCS has issues with hitting some targets. That becomes different when you get your spell power up. I don't mess around with Firestorms to attack orbs, except if...

Re: Remove Bolt of Magma

I disagree strongly - it is the only earth-related bolt spell, and a very necessary weapon for FE's engaging fire-resistant monsters. I use it all the time, even in the extended game. I certainly use it much more frequently than Bolt of Fire, even as a fire elementalist, because it is cheaper and hi...

Re: Lower LCS to level 7

That would get it too similar to Iron Shot, and in the end one of them would have to be removed. But LCS is significantly stronger, and definitely worth the extra effort as a one-shot killer for even really nasty stuff. It is a high-end spell, and it should show in its cost.

Are you aware that the effect of the spell school(s) is 4 times more than the effect of spellcasting? No, I did not know that - thanks to you and the other responders who set me straight on that. I seriously believed that SC has the same effect on spell success as any of the spell-schools involved.

If I find staff of power and ring of magic power before Temple, last things I want is more MP and less hunger I think you'd still be well advised to train SC, which helps with the failure rate of all your spells in the same way as the relevant spell schools do. Mara certainly is a good reason for me to leave his habitat alone for as long as possible. But towards the end of the game, depending on your background, you may be strong enough to tackle him.
