I've yet to play such game where die because of not clearing z:1-4.
Maybe it's not optimal. But it's much faster and MUCH less stressful for me.

I used to full clear zot as well, but then I tried diving it and realized that it just saves time and turns. You don't need XP and items at that point, and the danger is almost non-existant. I still clear z:5 in most of my games though.

I assume, by "the rest of zot" you mean z:1-4? Diving means not full clearing, exploring until the first stairs down.

I believe decreasing LoS is generally not a good idea unless you're able to do it on command, via evokable or spell, whereas increasing LoS instantly grants you a wealth of information one couldn't gain otherwise at a reasonable price. I like the archmage ring idea. Rings of fire/ice are basically the same as protection from fire/cold, since minus resist doesn't matter.
