I think you're barking up the wrong tree. You want to check out the _actor_areas function in areas.cc, and add a method to the actor class so that can check if it's using your new spell instead of the normal silence spell (unless this is replacing silence entirely, in which case you can skip that), ...

I got the highscore for a Nemelex choice for once! Sadly somebody sniped #8 for it first, so I didn't get the points.

In hindsight, though, it was dumb of me to not go for the last 5 runes (Hells/Tomb). I'm fairly sure I could have beaten 94.6k turns to get the all-time DDTm high score.

I implemented something like this a while back: https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commits/zig-evokable

That version removed Zigs from Pan but it could go either way. I'll probably merge it into trunk after the tournament ends.
