Those are the problems of having sqrt(2) movement, correct? I think part of the problem is that it sounds like you would still have square melee rules - e.g. it takes as long to attack diagonally as it does to attack orthogonally. You don't have to do Hive at all.
In fact, I usually keep it intact as a source of late-game piety gain with gods appreciating kills and corpse sacrifices. It's usually enough to get your piety from **** to two gifts in a row.

If you're resting to full MP after each combat, you're bound to receive his first gift approximately by the end of Lair, by Hive at the latest.

You don't. Food and piety are the only costs with Trog. Also, Trog does not use invocations.

Have some means of Haste in Zot:5. You don't want to be caught by an ancient lich and four 1's there.

One more thing you may want to know: Amulet of Guardian Spirit is SpBe's friend, effectively boosting it's HP by something like 25-30% in the midgame. Under Trog, you're unlikely to ever use any MP anyway.

I once met a similar fate with an XL26 SpVM who already cleared Snake, Swamp and Vaults. Went to Slime, went upstairs, got gianteyeballed and then gangbanged into nothingness in a single turn.

The hunger cost of Poison Arrow is a good reason to get Spellcasting and Int as high as possible. Once Spc*Int >= 550, Poison Arrow becomes hungerless. Venom Bolt, in my experience, is not crap - but it's accuracy is very, very low, especially compared to PA. More hits in one shot is probably the on...

Spriggan berserker. Watch they fey folk go SPLAT when Ogre enemies first show up. Not true. But the time you meet ogres you're bound to have enough HP to survive at least one hit, and with their clumsiness and spriggan's EV, they hardly hit you at all. And, you can kill ogres with two or three hits...

For the record, the same mechanic works if you want to pick up a certain number of items from one heap. However, you have to enter the pickup menu for this to work (by pressing "," or "g" and then "?").
