In trunk you get "Claws" displayed as your weapon if you're a Ghoul (or Troll or Felid), I think putting gloves on is supposed to change that message to "Nothing wielded" to indicate that you're not attacking with your claws anymore but it's not working correctly at the moment.

I think there was some ancient plan to have double-handed weapons (that is, quarterstaves and lajatangs (and dire flails apparently, huh)) actually give you two attacks but it was never implemented.

It's recoverable if you have a potion of brilliance on hand, but otherwise yeah, you need to be able to read a scroll. There's a Mantis report on the issue here, with the suggestion of lessening the penalties somehow.

I think you're also forgetting that Statue Form boosts your HP by 50% and gives you huge AC, especially in combination with Stoneskin. That sounds pretty defensive to me. :)

There are various proposals to simplify the various magic backgrounds on the wiki - I'd definitely agree that there could afford to be a lot fewer choices, but it's a bit difficult because there are so many different ideas and it inevitably leads to wanting to change starting book contents too.

Play them as a fighter with blink until you find a better spellbook, I guess. So you could go with pretty much any god, Kiku would be nice if you want to be more spellcaster-y, or good old boring Oka/Makhleb. I don't think there really needs to be a starting class for Tloc, come to think of it.

I definitely wouldn't want to take orc followers to Hell/Pan/Tomb (although maybe I'll try it sometime anyway if I play another HOPr). Properly equipped orc warlords deal with just about everything in Zot, though.
