Mostly you should stack decks of escape. Blind drawing individual cards can be a life-saver in the early/mid-game, but it also comes with appreciable danger. In the later game, with plenty of piety, it's almost never a good idea.

With Heal Wounds and Hasting gone, and Digging having so many charges, what is a current use for the scrolls anyway? I tend to go with Clouds later in the game, or Hex wands early, but it never feels particularly necessary or powerful.

Just pick a level of fighting or UC, then you will get a simple table that shows defence.

Fear might have been fine too. I might have used tele when I saw Agnes, instead of fighting her. Sacrificing scrolls is pretty bad, but love is likely worse. I was never able to get reasonable returns on EV as a troll going dex + dodge, even when doing 2 runes + vaults 1-4 in a +2 robe. That game a few versions ago. I guess it partly depends on what you consider "reasonable". The difference even between 10 and 15 EV is definitely worth having....
