Conjurors used to be able to choose between two equally crappy ice and fire books, but that went away along with Chaos Knights being able to choose between mahkleb xom and lugonu.

Irradiate does good damage and more importantly is guaranteed to hit. I had it on a HuFE before and it works very well with sticky flame, having 2 guaranteed "melee" hits does a lot to mitigate bad luck. I have no idea what the malmutate affect does on monsters, though.

Unless it's been reverted I'm pretty sure that in trunk there's no breakpoint in dodging where it suddenly starts to work, armour gives ypu a percentage-based malus on dodging skill instead of flat (or something to that effect).

If you gave us a character dump we could give you better advice.

In my recent fedhas win I learned that growing plants is a great way to block lof and melee attacks. lt saved my ass a couple times in z:5, while waiting for a teleport. That's not as good as fog or darkness, but it's a decent last resort.
