I do Elf after Vaults. It's even worse now than before with elementalists and dancing weapons everywhere.

If you're playing a blaster, don't do V5. Slime is way easier since you have high spellpower bolt spells.

Walk to the stairs and don't fight things that you can walk away from. Tele if things look bad. Win.

Usually the orb run is uneventful.

Edit: Not that it matters much at this point, but why are you using a spear?

If items aren't going to be abstracted, monster names should change according to the weapon they carry. It is extremely tedious in console to figure out what monster is carrying what weapon. At least of orc_w/_glaive has a different name than orc_w/_club, you can tell that there is a dangerous weapo...

For a newbie, yes. Tr has bad AC, and newbies have bad tactics. These combo very poorly in the S branches.

That could work on IE, since you have summons. Even on FE I use slings a lot if I find them (good damage, save mp for when I really need it), but there I wouldn't stop training conjurations. :)

I still don't understand how players can play console It's ok, I don't understand how people can play tiles. I didn't have a numpad and was too lazy to use the normal numbers (let alone learn vikeys) so I played exclusively with arrow keys and autoexplore for the first few weeks. One person on tile...

If you prefer console (ASCII/Unicode) to tiles, you can ssh into any of the online servers using putty. Passwords are all easily googleable.

Probably the easiest combo for a beginner is MiBe (minotaur berserker). You can leave autoskill on. Otherwise train your weapon skill first, later training fighting (for hp) and armour/dodging.

If your game plan is hiding behind hordes of summons and spending most of your time pressing a-a, then yes, this is a nerf. Most casters aren't summoners. Spending one turn to get ambrosia-speed mp regen is waay better than getting 2-3mp a turn while being wacked by ogres.

Hydras are already dangerous without the head chopping. And now you're being forced to use an inferior weapon. And the increase in danger level is insignificant?

Ghost Moth is not dangerous because nobody ever forces you to kill it with spells. Caustik shrike/iron giant/juggernaut is not dangerous because nobody ever forces you to kill it with melee. Orb of fire is not dangerous because nobody forces you to kill it. See the pattern? Lair hydras are speed 10...

Most ghosts are much stronger than the normal contents of their level. Player stats are usually off the charts compared to monster stats. Thats a straight up lie. Only a ghost with decent gear would have off the chart stats and im sorry but those are very rare until late into the game. I don't know...

You missed conjurations...

It would be fine for some wands to not have full LOS range. You were asking for hypothetically, what would be ideal ranges for weapons/items. I'm not sure your point makes sense.

consumables don't have variable range AFAIK

Take away ?recharge and Pak and wands are consumables. IMO, non-consumable, non-conjuration ranged sources should not exist.

I've always wanted a sort of fragile monster whose only spells are OOD and blink, particularly if they appear among crowds in a rocky place. It's sort of different from the currect conception of orc sorcerers though Orb spiders are fast instead of blinking. Everything else about them fits your desc...
