Another way to pick up yellow/red glow is Zot traps. If you or anyone else in LOS steps on one, you can receive heavy glow. I got red glow off a Zot trap once, read a scroll of vulnerability, and still had red glow afterward. I got pretty badly mutated that time . . .

Unseen horrors are like bats in that they only sometimes end a turn next to you unless you move in the right pattern. As such, they rarely follow when you go up stairs, and if they do, they probably won't follow when you go back down. They're very easy to shake with stairs.

the good ones are all too rare to depend on


Well, unless you pick Trog or Okawaru, both of whom are great for assassins. If you aren't picking one of those two, you're probably picking Kiku, Fedhas, or Makhleb, all of whom give you alternative ways to kill problematic baddies.

Jiyva also restores hp/mana every time a jelly eats something if your piety is high (and it usually is). The only meaningful downside to Jiyva (aside from the undead rot thing) is that you can't really stash stuff -- otherwise, it's pretty much all bonuses, and significant ones at that.
