*slow doesn't matter most of the time. Till you die due to being slow. You got so many scrolls of teleportation, you should be able to read them in a threatening situation as long as you recognise when to use them early enough.

If you have a lot of EV, you are likely to dodge whatever attack you would otherwise be shielding. EV is even more effective, for that matter, because it isn't heavily penalized for number of dodges per turn. I think that your idea to give crossbows innate penetration is a great idea. An interesting difference. It might make that artefact longbow Piercer feel a bit wierd though. If I find an early buckler though and can make use of it, I tend to train the sheild skill to 4 very quickly.

I don't see how it would be a niche for characters in heavy armour. Extra SH doesn't make different armours any more, or any less useful. Heavy armor means lower EV, and low EV makes SH more valuable because both EV and SH are checked against to-hit. So what if it happens that they are both checked...

Mana shield 1 can be a negative especially for spellcasters; I don't see a reason why Mana shield 1 and 2 can't be swopped around, hellcrawl style.

Also...that abbreviation of "bolt of cold" by one key press doesn't really seem worth the bother.

Gnoll seems to start off with really powerful SDI stats. Presumably this is to offset their slightly slower learning in the very early game, but it contributes to feeling overly suited for everything. A bit like how you wish humans would play.
