Crawl has some items that look like they're really good because of numbers they give your character but are essentially newbie traps. Hat of pondering and large shields are a couple of other examples.

Do you have some Stealth? I know it seems counterintuitive when you're using loud blasty spells all the time, but a couple of levels in Stealth can help a lot. It's also true that you don't need to learn a spell just because it's in your starting book, even if it is a good one. You could play an ae that never uses lightning bolt, and it would be perfectly fine. This decision is more about lightning bolt than about being ae or whatever.

Tavern's standards have really gone down if a strategy only has be able to get you to lair and orc for someone to aggressively defend it. I thought you had to get to at least vaults:2 to write a guide here.

Has no one noticed that eating makes you helpless, as in guaranteed to get hit? It's probably one of the two worst things you could do while teleporting, the other being like taking off your armour or something. So yeah - when in doubt about how a mechanic works, just play normally. The same applies...

Doesn't dexterity also increase your damage (particularly your accuracy)? Not that I greatly care, as we're talking about a total 9 stat points over the course of a game that gets progressively easier the longer it goes on. You can even win easily wearing rpois over slaying. =P
