This is quite amusing.

I suspect a lot of players forget that they can donate (some of) their money to Zin, willingly, at an altar anytime. This can be useful for weaker characters early in the game, especially if there are no good shops around.

I think it would be 'obviously bad'.

In my view it is not inevitable to be surrounded when slow. Corridors, digging, noise-management, doors, allies, translocations, consumables and powerful ranged attacks still exist.

It's a different story in places like Pan, Hell and Zigs admittedly. At that point, yeah, just get an axe.

Most better players tend to have higher skill levels in their chosen mode of attack, than in defence. For a MiBe that would almost inevitably be a melee weapon skill. Yes, and for a skilled player the answer is no. The skill drain is overrated. You don't need min-delay to survive. You don't need the highest level spells available to you to survive. And here's the kicker : if you can consistently get low hp species to lair, you dont need 20% of your HP to survive...

Harm is not dangerous in a lot of situations, but then a lot of situations just aren't dangerous. It partly depends on what they shouted in response too. If it was noise from a location away from you, then they will move that way, say an alarm trap.
