On the other hand, the Wz background benefits from learning more schools (conjurations, summoning, fire, translocations, poison and hexes), while other book background usually only use two or three. I had a Statue-cat a while ago and the damage felt pretty underwhelming. Is there any value in picking Str at level up, to get to 10 maybe?

I would usually recommend to branch into conjurations and/or summons/necromancy.

Normally these questions have someone say 'How often are you going to find unrandart X? Just use that, it's fun!' Unfortunately, 'Finisher' is really quite boring, and not even that great. I don't think it's very obvious what enchantment level actually does, or how it compares to weapon base damage, etc. Let's just say that large rocks are the highest damage (per aut) generic ranged weapon in the game. Have a look at this morgue.

Stealth skill 8 at xl 6. Started with +2 scale and +0 dagger. Avoided Sigmund on D:2 and Menkaur on D:4. No weapon skill trained until xl 8.

I would suggest that the success of Berder's streak is good evidence for the viability of the stealth training strategy.

At stealth skill 4, a Na in scale mail has a chance greater than 10% not to wake up Grinder and nearly 20% chance not to wake up Ijyb. At skill 5 it starts to become pretty useful. The XP was there, as seen by training axes from 3 to 6.7.
