Okay, I didn't have all the tools needed to clear Lair branches. I thought I could kill TRJ with Scroll of Immolation and Irradiate, but got swarmed and had to bail. Maybe I'll be back later with a better weapon or conjuration online.

There need to be poor weapon choices so that the appearance of good choices is meaningful, yeah? I mean, if everyone started the game next to a fully-stocked weapon rack, then yeah it would be pointless for clubs and scythes to be there. Why would any character who would want to use either version of this spell (ie is in melee routinely and is willing to blow most or all of their MP on a kill) ever be willing to invest enough skill in Charms for a level 7 as well as equipment opportunity in lighter armour to be able to cast it?

The http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Wu_Jian page has language for the abilities describing the rationale for designing them the way they are, unlike for any other god. Still under development though so who knows where they'll end up.

Unarmed Combat used to help with aux attacks like hoof kicks while attacking with a melee weapon. It doesn't anymore. Leave UC at 0 unless you plan to hit things without a weapon equipped.

Yeah Temporal Distortion is what I remember most from my Chei win. I had become an Unarmed Combat shredding machine, so the only thing I feared was things that could kill me from range. Solved.
