I don't see why UC improving auxiliary attacks is more intuitive than it not doing so. "Unarmed" doesn't mean "miscellaneous," it means "without a weapon."

This is a general issue for melee fighters. Crawl's number crunching is formidable - this is not a game that's going to see a crowd funded pen 'n' paper release anytime soon. Then making it knockback non-flying players/monsters seems like a pretty simple thing to make it more interesting, and a lot more transparent (I had absolutely no idea that there was a difference between flying and not flying).

Another minor reason is that they are the highest base damage weapon that can get the speed brand on a non-artefact. Even more minor is the fact that they can have the vamp and pain brands, which are not available on all weapons.

Except that late D, and definitely Depths, is going to have lots of vaults which often give above-normal loot. Crypt vaults are definitely rarer or feel that way to me.

Crypt certainly has the highest xp/danger ratio of the branches mentioned. The loot is mediocre to nonexistent outside the final level though.

There's also maprot in abyss, which does serve a function, true, but is also annoying when, for example, you teleport near where you were before, and you can actually see that for a second before a screen refresh and the old area is dumped. I guess there's no way to fix it without changing abyss tho...

Yup. I assume this is partly because of their dual-wielding quirk: deep elf blademasters never drop their starting weapons. That's because they can actually wield any weapon in their hands. You can test it out yourself: !fight deep elf blademaster; claymore . claymore v 5 yak is pretty fun to watch.

I checked the list of possible mercs: it's orc kinghts to orc warlords, nagas to warriors, merfolk to impaler, tengu to tecj OR warrior, either of those to reaver. Draconians don't seem to get classes.

Of things that (i think? pretty sure i didn't leave any out, though i might have included some things that I shouldn't have) can be mercenaries: orc kinghts to orc warlords, kobolds to big kobolds, centaurs to warriors, yaktaurs to captains (who promotes them, anyway?), nagas to warriors, naga mages...

You're in 0.13, so I'd suggest going down to D:20 after clearing Lair and Orc. To be honest, neither the short sword or the mace are very good. The scimitar, on the other hand, is pretty great. I'd say start focusing on getting your Long Blades skill to 14: you can kill hydras with makhleb abilities...

I thought about the xp but since spriggan monsters are rare outside some Lair vaults / Zigs anyway they could be adjusted up or down to keep the xp at what it needs.
