That's true, they can teleport you deeper into the vault. But, given the size of the vault compared to the rest of the floor, you're more likely to get teleported somewhere safe. You can also get it with most forms of teleportation/blinking, fog, corruption, and imprison.

Skald was never a good background. It's still stronger than fighter IMO, but gladiator is probably better. Sif/Vehumet are terrible god choices for any of those three backgrounds. Song of slaying is in fact useless by the way.

Actually, what would be really nice is if there was a crawl tileset like my favorite nethack one: the nethack tileset was still ASCII, but the letters were stylized to help indicate what it was.
