Door vaults are karmic balance for all of the Zot traps you're not stumbling on because you can see them 5 grids away. And in some ways, they suck harder.

Spriggan headbutt attacks should get a damage bonus against male humanoids (size medium or large only). Don't annoy someone whose head is level with your groin.

Most of the vaults that are seen the most often don't have monsters, namely the D:1 entry vaults. And of those that do, relatively few of them have the monsters in a position where they can attack you on entry.

You may need to dig up an older version of Debian if you go that route. Depending on the hardware, you may not have drivers available in the installer for things like the hard drive. Invisibility wouldn't have helped. Nikola can see invisible.

Invisibility while standing in a fog cloud doesn't help much either even if the monster can't see or sense invisible, since you create a visible disturbance. (Scrolls of fog work wonders against unseen horrors.)

Amen on that, minmay. Coupled with the removal of detect curse scrolls, I'm no longer in a rush to try out glowing/runed/whatever equipment, and doing ^F on (foo && ego) waits until I have remove curse identified.

Ice Beast before Ozo's. Ice beasts resist poison and deal respectable cold damage, which neutralizes the big threats in early Lair (spiny frogs and black mambas). And they're faster than your Naga, so they can intercept threats for you while you're backing off.

Also, note that allowing people to memorize spells at 0% success makes training some stuff less of a hassle and might save people an amnesia scroll. The whole point of going SpEn^Kiku is to stab things with a pain-branded short blade. If you absolutely must have a sabre, hit the first two levels of Elf. But banish any thought of getting the Necronomicon over a pain brand. Go for the trove. You'll find more teleport scrolls, or a wand. Go for it ...

I used it exactly once, one time when I got the undead end vault in Swamp. I strung together a bunch of Projected Noise to draw the monsters out of the vault so that I'd have to make only one trip past the miasma. Worked for most of them, too...I only ended up fighting three or four inside the vault.

If you think the food clock in this game is bad, the ID minigame is atrocious. Some classes exist solely for the purpose of playing this minigame (and some of those are prestige classes, even!).

Seeing an orc wizard turn invisible and remembering where he was to pacify him...good move.

Blindly walking into him while he's still invisible and getting slapped with penance for attacking a neutral...not so good move.

(Ely penance is easy to pacify your way out of, though.)

I was thinking about the difficulty of gaining Chei piety with a race that has intrinsic speed. Gaining from 0* would be harder than from 2* (where Chei is already slowing you down a bit). No piety, no abilities...and a god that's doing nothing for you (or nothing good) is worse than having no god a...

A FeMo of Chei would at least start with 2* piety when you took the god. Try FeFi or FeGl (if either of those is possible) for a true exercise in pain.

Yes, but when you get flattened like that with a giant club, Xom can attach a rotor and an engine to you and turn you into a helicopter.
