He does it all the time, Okawaru too. As I read somewhere, only weapon acquirement gets you a guaranteed weapon on anything you have weapon skill over 8.

Funnily enough, it's better advice to go for Xom if you want mutations, than Jiyva. The benefits are too situational, which frankly is annoying. Of course Xom's mutations are like 50-50 good/bad. They should tweak Jiyva to only remove your beneficial mutations if you have more than a bunch already.....
