The best solution would be to introduce fatigue into melee ranged, so that spell casters didn't feel like they had the unfair disadvantage of spell hunger, which does in fact serve some useful purposes although they may not be obvious at first.

Focus on blasting. Iron shot, crystal spear, and ignition should do the job. Beyond that, shatter and firestorm. I recommend more into fire and earth than into conjurations. Conjurations is just the icing on top of the cake once you have those others up very high.
