Re: YAFVP: MiBe^Trog (was CIP: first character ever in Zot)

Congrats! With liches I'd run all the way to the entrance hallway to get a sharp corner since they seemed no faster than me You can use xv feature (also try + or - after x, it selects next/previous monster in LoS) to see its description (including spells!). I do use xv a lot but hadn't thought to u...

Re: CIP: MiBe, first character ever in Zot

It appears that this game, as successful as it is compared to my earlier games, is going to be a close-run thing and likely to end in death. No, I'd say you have an excellent chance of getting the win now. You were right! On Zot 5, I cleared the normal level first (not sure if that's the right thin...

Re: CIP: MiBe, first character ever in Zot

There is nothing wrong with using Execuioner's Axe with Axes 22 or so, don't feel obligated to reach Axes 26 ASAP, it is usually optimal to get more Fighting and Armour (or Dodging for EV-based characters) first. That's good to know. But I got this so early, I'm guessing my Axes was around 12 or so...

Re: Let's Play Crawl on youtube

but I still believe there is little to be shown with videos that couldn't in a discussion, with crawl. IMHO it is easier to learn crawl by watching a good player playing than by discussing crawl. The only exception is when that good player is playing so fast that you don't understand what's going o...

Re: CIP: MiBe, first character ever in Zot

Pikel's whip of electrocution and the Lajatang of Order tempted me to improve their skills at the point in the game in which they came to me, but I should have kept training Axes despite the other weapons being temporarily "better" than the ax I had at the time. That.... sounds like you'r...

Re: CIP: MiBe, first character ever in Zot

Berserkers usually stay with a single weapon category, Trog is almost guaranteed to gift every weapon type. That Executioner's Axe would be almost ideal weapon with Axes 26. Yes that is one of the lessons I've learned from this game. I had planned for Axes from the start. Pikel's whip of electrocut...

YAFVP: MiBe^Trog (was CIP: first character ever in Zot)

I've finally made it into Zot and have the first four levels cleared. My biggest concern right now is my resistances, since the packs of draconians in Zot 3 and 4 gave me several close calls. Related to this is the question of which of several good weapons I should use as my default weapon, and in w...

Re: YASD MiBe^Trog: Evocables are loud

When the tactical situation was different than what I'd planned for, because the fight with the ghost had brought TRJ out to me instead of me going into his lair, I should have aborted and gone back upstairs. Instead, I tried my original plan, with less time and room to do it in.

YASD MiBe^Trog: Evocables are loud

I had two runes in my first game to ever get even one rune. I had strong evocables and four rods I could get 3+ shots each out of: ignition, lighting, inaccuracy, and clouds. I had amulets of corrosion, clarity and mutation resistance, but fairly poor MR, so I thought I'd get the slimy rune as my th...

Re: AC v. EV?

Trog's Hand doesn't last very long, but on the other hand you don't really need it to; it will last long enough for the situations where it is important. You do not need MR ring mail. 29/23 defenses for a Be is somewhat mediocre, but yes, you can win the game with that. Just keep training more dodg...

Re: AC v. EV?

... Armour skill 18.6, Dodge 18.8. My AC is 29 and my EV is 23 ... I expected more EV with Dodging 18.8, put bonus points into Dex if you didn't. That would be the ring: SustAb rElec rC+ rN+ Dex-3 Int+4 SInv. I've needed SInv in a bad way, and the rElec lets me use disc of storms, and the rC+ will ...

Re: AC v. EV?

I am a beginner, having just gotten my first ever rune (and now two) with my current MiBe. Thus far I've not encountered any MR+ items except for a +3 ring mail and a couple of Trog-gift launchers that I'm not using. (I have three rods and the disc of storms that I've trained Evocs for, and another ...

How do I use the CAO Webtiles level mini-map?

I played a few games on a local machine before starting to play Webtiles at CAO. I really appreciated in the local version being able to left-click on the level map to travel there. All I have been able to figure out on CAO is that a right-click will show you a view, and left-click doesn't appear to...

Re: YA 1st Rune P (and almost YASD)

The most important thing: put on the ring of cold resistance. Right now you have cold vulnerability (because of the dragon armour), and it is very dangerous. The wizardry and dex+2 ring isn't good anyway. I know, and I was taking a calculated risk. I have a +7 dire flail of crushing rC+ in my stash...

YA 1st Rune P (and almost YASD)

I've gotten my first Rune, in the Swamp. And would you believe, on the way out I bashed the Lernaean Hydra to death, while berserk, wielding a rod of inaccuracy? It doesn't prompt you for that like it does if you're wielding a launcher, since it is technically a weapon. Fortunately M&F is...

Re: CiP: Newbie's MiBe

Please confirm that I understand what happened: the INT loss from the wretched star was a malmutation, not a stat drain. The potion of restore abilities didn't work, but a potion of cure mutation might have if it had chosen "dopey" out of all the ones I was saddled with. In any case, with ...

Re: CiP: Newbie's MiBe

That sword isn't bad, for a long sword. Yeah, you could win with it, but still keep an eye out for a demon blade or a bastard sword to use that brand weapon scroll on. You've made a fair investment in shields skill, so I guess it probably makes sense to stick with 1 handers. Yeah, Trog doesn't seem...

RIP: Brainless (Was: CiP: Newbie's MiBe)

Hello, first post here. I'm new again to Crawl (I dabbled in it a couple years ago with no success) and this time I intend to pick a build and stick with it. I tried three SpEn and then read several posts here suggesting that not approaching monsters that enter LoS might be *the* basic tactic of Cra...
