I don't think Dr is a good "my first anything" race. You need to do a reasonable amount of thinking on your feet right at the point in the game where new players are having tactical problems, and you need to play differently each game. The new Conjurer is an uncomplicated, fun class - yes ...

TrHu of Elyvilon was probably the most fun cruise through the dungeon I have ever had. Early hydras were hard to pacify, but the starting collection of large rocks did just fine :)

(Later, getting into boulder duels with various kinds of giant was highly entertaining.)

I have stair danced it with some characters, but generally try not to as you are forced to tank a lot of different threats for quite some time. Walking (or better, blinking) out along one of the corridors is much less hairy!

My feeling: New Crypt is significantly more entertaining than old crypt, but not significantly more deadly. My last character (conjurator, no Necromancy) did it before he had any runes.

Hey, welcome to the forums. Don't give up yet! 1. Getting Abyssed when you're not ready is definitely a disaster (although not as fatal as it first looks). Try not to do that! As mentioned, MR is great and probably the most important, but also stay out of Elf, and just stay far away from the handful...

I can't remember who said it, but one of the best pieces of Crawling advice I ever saw was: always carry one potion of speed, and stash the rest so they don't get destroyed. Running away is winning! Prism was certainly the wrong choice, but dying with a source of haste unused is the worst/most frust...

A couple in quick succession, both with frankly wonderful names:

1) The +4, +5 mace of Dung (elec, +Inv, rC+, STR +3 SInv)
2) Biopom's Incunabulum of Dusty Confrontation (Magic Dart, Sting, Stone Arrow, Iron Shot, Lehudib's Crystal Spear)

As others have said, Iron Shot has worked well for me. Just the usual things - don't fight more than one, haste up if you have it, and make sure you have enough mana to soak up the misses :P
