Dicking around and tried changing the argument to random_tile(2000) and now the tile changes every turn.

EDIT: Figured it out. Just copy the entire random_tile() code into the rc file and change N there.

I think it's mostly about positioning - you can get out of their LOS pretty quickly if they're at the edge, then wait around a corner. Autoexplore can put you in bad positions for the initial encounter. Also it may be better to come back later when you've got more HP.

Elec demon whip worked pretty well for me, backed by rmsl, rC++, 50 AC and 30 EV. They're not resistant to electricity and the fast attack speed helped a lot. I think I took ~50-100 damage fighting packs of 4.
