Re: Early Hybridization for Elementalists?

Yes, it is definitely viable to hybridize early. Start as e.g. MiEE, wear the first plate armour you've found and bash everything to death with maces. Being now serious, it is not always good to quickly start training weapon even when you find a nice one. Leaving your initial skill path early (or hy...

Re: Proposal: Remove Ecumenical Temple

It's worth at least that piety that you gain and there is not much danger. I have no clue what you play with, but most of my characters on xl:3 cannot handle orc priest or poison from two snakes, which is quite common meeting on D:4-D:7. What is so important in a 'milestone' if you reached it sever...

Re: Proposal: Remove Ecumenical Temple

It annoys me when I find the temple, but it is guarded by OOD monsters and/or uniques and I do not even want to come nearby. Not always I can find easily the temple, which sometimes leads to boring autoexplore just to find the entrance on the last uncovered tile of D4-D7. With overflow altars I stil...

Re: Allow training of Shields with shield in inventory only

You could also look at the first post where it talks about trolls and ogres... Indeed - I wasn't so much on about the special case of not finding a buckler before XL10 as the "special case" of being an Ogre or Troll and thus being unable to use bucklers at all, and still taking the full p...

You can also use bots (sequell) to check what situation did the player die in. Maybe he got bored and firestormed himself to death? Or maybe it was god's wrath? I'm curious!

Re: Demonspawn X of Chei

My main disagreement with bart is that I think it is significantly better to approach "melee-oriented hybrids" (or anything like that, really) from a book start instead of from a non-book start, since it is much much easier to find weapons and armour than it is to find specific spellbooks...

DsMo of Chei is definitely my preference over DsTm, although the second is reasonable, too. Let me come back to that later. Re: Demonspawn X of Chei

Yes, the strength bonus is very significant. Monk's damage with chei might go up even by 100% thanks to bonus strength and dex (the second adds much less, though). About intelligence - monks tend to wear light or medium armour because attack speed is dependent on armour encumbrance. Therefore also s...

Re: Demonspawn X of Chei

If you want Chei, definitely monk is my favourite, as he benefits even more from high stats than other classes. DsMo of Chei is not the easiest one, but if you want, give it a try. I would advise then to focus in early game on unarmed combat, and quite soon also start training evasion to get basic d...

Re: Do not consider wild magic mutation as good

ok, wild magic is bad for buffs on characters who don't want to damage or disable enemies with spells, but it's obviously good for damaging and disabling spells. In fact, can you even max out spell power of spells like mass confusion without this mutation? It is not so obviously good if you cannot ...

Re: Allow training of Shields with shield in inventory only

Some people train haste when their skills are barely mediocre and the same works for shields. In both cases this might be reasonable. Apparently we have different opinion on shield (especially with ego or even better randart) value on a spellcaster. Several times I happily wore normal shields even o...

Re: Allow training of Shields with shield in inventory only

Like I said, why would you even want to train 10+ shields just to use a shield and if you can't even use it without hurting your killing abilities... Why not actually spend that exp on your killing abilities or other defences, while you wait for a buckler if you want to use shields that much. I thi...

Re: All scrolls auto-ID on pick up

I don't think you can call the id game spoilery. Of course, reading spoilers can help, but the definition of a spoilery feature is one that is very hard to learn from experimentation. And this isn't the case. How about reducing the frequency of RC scrolls? That could add a bit of tension to scroll ...

Re: All scrolls auto-ID on pick up

Personally I find identifying items as an interesting early challenge. Proper spending of ID scrolls might save life and that's a worthy addition. On the other hand, as the game proceeds, identifying becomes useless. If ID scrolls were more scarce, they could impact player's choices (should I wear t...

Re: Do not consider wild magic mutation as good

Permanently altering or boosting your character should not be without risk, and this is a similar kind of effect to "You grow horns!" and the like-- there's a benefit, yes, but it comes with a significant drawback. The whole point of mutations is that you have to adapt your strategy. Exce...

Do not consider wild magic mutation as good

It is not unusual for my characters to get "wild magic" mutation via drinking potion of beneficial mutation. Most of the time there is nothing beneficial about it. Non-casters do not care (no benefit, no hurt - just useless). Hybrids cry a lot. Rarely they have enough spell skills to be ha...

Re: I think Trog's wrath need a couple of short-terms teawk

Speaking of Oka's wrath, properly armed character with full HPs will be able to deal with one pack of enemies. With Trog's wrath it's definitely more difficult and blinking/teleporting is usually the only real chance. I recently died after leaving Trog, because BIA surrounded me in Abyss with no cha...
