The reward for training a spell school to a high level is a strong spell. That's kind of the whole point. You train a skill. You get a good thing in exchange. Warper is a fine start if you don't fall for the trap of training translocations heavily, as if it was the main skill of most book starts.

If Translocations school was removed, I would still want to keep Warper as a background.

Why? I'm not suggesting dispersing them all to the same school. adding, say, C.Blink to a different spell school drastically powers up said other school(s) even if it's expensive. A big improvement to Hep would be to slightly refactor the ranged autofight function so that it prioritizes enemies which you can hit without hitting your allies.

One thing a lot of players don't do is check item drops for improvements.

Example: You are wearing crappy old boots of flying, but on Elf:3 there are "runed boots" which might be boots of running.

It doesn't matter what you planned.

Sling and quickblade fill the same role, except quickblade is rarer and pretty much better. Keep rocking it until you find an endgame weapon.

You should teleport away.

If you insist on fighting him, quaff haste, hit him with phial, then acid a few times, then sack, then a couple boxes, then maybe back to acid or sack. Keep him in the water surrounded by spiders and shit, let them do the work.

I am OK with a vault that is cool flavor 99% of the time, and 1% of the time it has a slight reward for a player who can get Shatter castable by labyrinth.

I'm assuming those are ordinary quality items and not, say, artifact jewellery.

Though honestly even that would be OK.
