The advice tasonir is offering is focused on the part of the game where characters have had a chance to develop their strengths. Before this point, Chei mostly makes you more likely to die. If you want to focus on this part of the game try fedhas, who gives you a huge power boost at 1*.

This is not a good solution to the problem identified in this post: now instead of switching repeatedly to a +2 flaming dagger to kill green rats, you have to switch to a weaker bow to kill green rats.

In my experience, you're better off with the starting shield than without. It can often be a good idea to ditch the shield if you find a good two-handed weapon before you've got a good one-handed weapon.
